ssmurfmier1985 Thanks for the tips!! I will do some more tests on my side.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Oh wow the difference is insane, feel really stupid not noticing that, thanks. Also believe it or not but there's not a single tri on that model, they're all quads, but they're merely bundled together. I'll still try applying your (or a variation of ) advice though, so thanks again.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

bbsdwerbeagentur Well what I actually did in this render was to place a Plane behind the model, then give it a material with the Principled BSDF shader, ramped the Metallic to 1 and set the roughness to 0.1, which caused the HDRI to reflect in a blurry manner. Though surely you could blur the HDRI/background image with enough DoF, no? I haven't experimented enough to find out.

  • silentheart00 replied

    Yeah!  Looks good!

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective Ah now I see when you zoom in like that 😊 No probs! And no need to feel stupid, when you're focused on the modeling part and making things nice, sometimes other things get a bit lost out of sight. Easily fixed so nothing to worry about!

Great work so far, and yea shrink wrap to stick to the base shape is a good technique specially when working on curves and spheres, but any projection will have a bit of deformation so you may need to compensate for that o nthe mesh before the project.

on the model itself I would say heads and limbs need to be a bit more bulky specially the jaw, also are you using the auto smooth?

    Day 3 done!

thecabbagedetective Aaron before you would touch the proportion differences of this version would like to write - that I like yours one better than the reference.

It is so cute in this format, it got an own interpretation and by that personality, looks so great

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

    Day 4 done!

Well, done probably isn't the word I'd use. "Passed by" is more appropriate, due to being so busy with other stuff I didn't get much done. Spent my entire time taking feedback reproportioning and remodeling certain areas. Good in a way though, gives me more stuff to work on on Week 4, thereby making it feel justified that I'm dedicating a week to that. Still not completely 1:1 but I think it's close enough so that I'm happy* with it.

Don't forget to enable "denoising" in the scene layer panel, this could save you soooo much time in rendering! With that done, have a good one!

*pleased for like a day until I see the flaws and become overly critical

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

n647 Cheers for those pointers, they helped out! And nope, never really touched it, maybe that's something I should get around to doing...

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

csehz Why thank you! Whilst I have reproportioned it now it's still not completely 1:1 so maybe it still has that air of cuteness to it that you like?

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective Oh yeah! That's looking mighty fine 😬

    * don't beat yourself up, you're  doing great! you've only been at it for about half a year you know, look how far you've come in that short time!

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

thecabbagedetective Sure it still cute absolutely and at least he is having already a brother then :D

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Cheers pal, it's just an intrinsic part of my self haha, looking back to seeing where we started it's madness how far we come. I'm sure once you've been at this for a year you'll look back and your mind will be blown, it's kinda crazy.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

    csehz Glad to hear!

What a great thread thecabbagedetective! Full of progress, insight, and tips. Really great stuff. Oh and your model of course,  which is top-notch. Clank turned out very nice: Crisp, authentic to the character design, shading + lighting + texturing is delicious. A++ for the week, my man 👏

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

@theluthier Why thank you very much! Not quite finished yet though, still got a couple more plans for this week!

thecabbagedetective Aaron I like in you that you are so hard worker, always going to the maximum possible on the week.

  • silentheart00 replied

    Yeah!  Looks good!

    Day 5 done!

Whilst I can't do the scene that I originally intended for this week, I'm still gonna get a more simple one set up. Modelled a "Gadge-bot" today, which in the games are these little robots that Clank can control telepathically. Being more simple to model than Clank I managed to get it done within 1 day which was nice, though I feel in certain areas aka the eye stalks I need to add an indent on the head itself, but I'm not 100% sure how I'd go about that. Well next is the scene itself, which I'll have done tomorrow! Have a good day all, and happy studying!

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

csehz Well aren't you kind, ta very much! I certainly do my best, albeit to my detriment at times, haven't really had any time to relax at all recently. Oh well, part and parcel of trying to get my skills job-worthy, eh?
