    Another week, another project.

The disappointment over my last piece of homework has set in now, as it usually does. Wish there were more things I did but hey-ho that's how it goes. Onward!

Whilst the details of what I want to do are still vague I know I'm going to be modeling Clank from Ratchet... & Clank. Will I try and tell a story or just make a simple model? Who knows! Lets find out!

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective I love this idea! But wow that's a big project for one week, pretty complicated (but guess that's only for me you got a lot more experience :) )

Looking forward to seeing this evolve throughout the week :-D

I sure don't want to come up against that robot in a duel!!

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ggolden-kitty Nah I'm gonna be using 2.79 for this because I have an idea for a scene that requires the smoke simulation which at the moment seems broken in 2.8 unfortunately. And trust me, this guy's like a foot tall haha.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ssmurfmier1985 With dedication I should be able to build Clank himself in a day or two. The rest of the scene I have an idea for though? That's a different story...

thecabbagedetective Can't wait to see it!!

    Day 1 done!

Didn't get too much done today admittedly, mostly a combination of not starting until the evening and spending a chunk of time making my topology go from gob-smackingly awful to pretty bad, which was a time consuming venture. Got the majority of the body done but there's still a few details left.

One question I have to ask though (admittedly not about modeling) is how to I get the primary material looking like it does in the picture I showed a few comments ago? Crank up the roughness? Not really sure. Maybe I should try to go for chrome though? 'Cause that's how he looks in the PS4 game:

Not really sure, rather torn. Be sure to tell me what you think! Above all else though, have a good one and good luck on your own homework!

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective Of to a good start I see :) I think thinkering with  the roughness is a good starting point, that's what I would try, but admittedly my knowledge of materials doesn't go much further than that.. I don't know what your end scene will be so can't say yet which version I think I like best. Maybe you should post two WIP's  when your almost done with both options, then we can choose :)

thecabbagedetective Disappointment from last week?! Whatevs. No reason for that, sir. You did amazing work week 1.

  • Kent Trammell replied

thecabbagedetective If I understand your question correctly, the material looks plenty close to the reference imo. However the environments (for reflections) and lighting is what's really different. Try to find a city-at-night hdri.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

@theluthier Haha why thank you, it's like that with pretty much everything I've made so far, just that niggling feeling of "Yea you did good, but you coulda done BETTER," it's a mindset I need to get out of really.

You're right about the HDRI too, though I feel another thing is I have to make the black materials more accurate as well, I'll definitely give it a shot!

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Ta very much! Definitely a good point, though with the idea I have I think the chrome will be much better. It'll allll make sense soon...

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective Just waiting patiently over here.. 😉

  • silentheart00 replied

    Good work so far.

    Day 2 done!

Managed to get the majority of the body done, just missing a few details like the coil under the arm or the screws on the hands. Was kinda hoping I could manage to get Clank completely finished today but oh well, not sure if I'll manage to get the full scene done but hey, nothing stopping me to do so after class is finished! Also I think I found a balance for the main material I like, and @theluthier was right in that a different HDRI really improved its look, so thanks!

Also as a small bonus here's the Day 1 WIP animated, which I wanted to show yesterday but due to it taking a while to render I had to wait. There's quite a few dents but most - if not all - have been ridden of now.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective This is looking good! The other HDRI helped a lot I see, the material looks awesome. Keep going you're doing great 😄How do you make that cool animation?

  • Julian B(bsdwerbeagentur) replied

thecabbagedetective Looks awesome so far Aaron! Can't wait to see the final result!  :)

  • n647 replied

thats quite a great job so far :D , you really did a lot of work in quite a short time

  • silentheart00 replied

thecabbagedetective Good work!  There's some pinching on the top back at the corners, if you're not aware.  Otherwise, good work!
