yyukinoh1989 Why ta very much! I'm interested by what you mean by more detail on the nose though? Like maybe hollowing them out more or something?

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ccarrotnl THAT'S IT. Looks so much better now, appreciate it! Obviously still not a 1:1 but this was some great insight.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

silentheart00 Huh, not a bad price, thanks for the recommendation! My Birthday is during the next class so maybe I'll pick it up then, maybe sculpt a character to light lol.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Ayy not a bad choice! By the way if you ever get your hands on a PS2/PS3 I also highly recommend the first 4 games, they're the best imo, but I beat the remake 3 times so you're definitely in for a good time! I also decided to comprise a picture of a few (read: a lot more than a few) games that I'd recommend. The higher up it is, the more I recommend it, if that makes sense. I'm gonna assume you have a PS4, Switch and 3DS but if there's a system I missed (or added you don't have) then just say.

Bit blurry so I'll just write them out (all Vita games here are on PS4):

Top tier: Persona 5, Yakuza 0

Second tier: Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (best to play base SMTIV first though), God of War, Yakuza Kiwami, Bloodborne, Super Mario Odyssey

Third tier: Zero Escape: 999: Nine Persons, Nine Hours, Nine Doors (yes that's the whole title), TLOZ: Breath of the Wild, Bayonetta 2, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Nioh, Zero Escape: Virtues Last Reward, Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma

Fourth tier: Danganronpa 1, 2, Ultra Despair Girls (haven't played V3 yet), Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Until Dawn, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Monster Hunter World

Fifth tier: Metro Redux, Diablo 3, Pokemon: Ultra Sun/Moon (only if you haven't played base Sun and Moon and you're not a Pokemon nut), Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

A few games I forgot to add were South Park: The Fractured But Whole, NieR: Automata, Doom 2016 and XCOM 2, but if you'd like a detailed explanation or reasoning behind any of these I'd be more than happy to give it to you. Happy gaming!

    thecabbagedetective bear nose

you see.in the middel there should be a crease . as well near the side . hope this helps

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective Heh heh,     spinning bear attack, lol 😆

Looks so much better!! Great work Aaron. Good you're taking a slower pace. Still kicking ass with this bear so kudos for that 😬 glad my suggestions helped 🙂

Loving the teaser! Never listened to Manowar before, made me think of Dragon Force and Iron Maiden. After this I'm thinking it might be a rough though warrior bear with all kinds of cool dented scratched armor and blood on his paws. Could be totally wrong of course but that's what I was thinking 😎

You will post it in your gallery right when it's finished some time after class?? Wanna see it 😄

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective You were almost right! Since I was a very disappointed owner of a WII with a horrific sweeping  controller I haven't bought any more nintendo consoles, only handheld. Instead I saved up my money and went for PlayStation. So I got a PS4 and a 3DS.

I don't have too much money I can spend on games since the bills come first so I only have a few, here's my modest collection (they all fit in one photo lol 😛):

I love gaming! but I'm not good at it (played ratchet and clank only couple of hours Thursday and have died at least 15 times already lol), but through trying again and again I usually get there after some time 😬 Most of these games I have not started or finished yet, so I'll probably be busy with them for a long time still, since I also spend a lot of time at work and learning at cg cookie 😉

Most of the games you mentioned I don't know yet, which of these are in the same kind of genre as the games I own? So I think if I sum it up I like action rpg / adventure, platform games, bit of puzzles in between, good storylines. I don't do online gaming or co-op, I'm a single player gamer all the way. And yes I'm a Pokémon nut too 😉

ssmurfmier1985 I got my daughter into pokemon a few months ago. Now she is a crazy pokemon fan. She's almost finished Pokemon Pearl and she is only 4 years old!

  • smurfmier1985 replied

cptken That's awesome! They learn so fast these days with all the technology we have 😄

  • silentheart00 replied

cptken Kids are such sponges at that age, it's incredible how they can pick things up.

thecabbagedetective Glad to hear you're taking this week easier. Even still you're making solid progress on your bear.  The legs feel a bit long to me. They could use some shortening and the torso some elongation to make it look less human and more bear-ish.

Also I really like the anatomy adcivefrom cptken. Studying anatomy specifically won't do much more for a modeler than studying images of the human body and learning to interpret shapes via light and shadow analysis. That perspective should free up any pressure to learn the names muscle groups and bones in favor of simply learning to form [any] shape.

PS: If you're an aspiring CG professional, studio gig or freelance, you're in the right place with CGC. Everyone here wants to facilitate an environment for our members to develop professional level skills. And I'd say you're well on your way to getting there 👍

    Day 5 done!

Most of what I got done today was looking up how to do fur properly, still not feeling the most confident about it but you never get anywhere sitting on the fence! Just not looking forward to making a low-res version of the bear to put the fur on, as advised, that stuff takes a whiiiiiile. I also redid the three primitives but I'll probably tweak them a bit by tomorrow 'cause of areas like the lumpy cube.

With the bear I took the advice I was given, making his legs a bit stumpy (though they could possibly need a bit more), his body being simultaneous more elongated yet rotund.

Also I was showing this to my friend and he says that the mouth may be too big. I think he may have a point but I'll let you be the judge.

Honestly if it's the best idea to retopologise a variant of the bear to put fur on it I might forgo fur for this class in favour of just adding more details. Well with that being said be sure to give your thoughts, and have a good one!

yyukinoh1989 Oooooh I getcha now, something to add. Cheers!

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Why thank you! I don't want to confirm nor deny your guess as to alleviate spoilers but you can bet it'll be on the gallery when it's finished.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Well not sure how much into turn based RPGs you are outside of Pokemon but Persona 5 is great. Great gameplay, story, music, characters, artstyle, oh and it's like 100 hours long. Great investment.

Story wise there I definitely think that the Zero Escape games are the strongest, though they can mess with your head a bit. Do be warned though, there's a *lot* of dialogue, but the gameplay is some good ol' fashioned puzzles. Just for goodness sake play them in order, trust me, that is *very* important.

If you like Action RPGs then Diablo 3 is great, story is pretty weak overall but the combat is cathartic as hell. The Witcher 3 is probably the strongest all-rounder here, aside from Persona 5. Both fantastic RPGs.

Other good games for stories there would be Ace Attorney and Danganronpa. In Ace Attorney you're essentially a lawyer from the world of anime so you spend half the game looking for clues and the other half going through people's statements. Danganronpa is essentially that as well but on a multitude of drugs. If you can tolerate/like anime I find myself recommending DGR more just because of how absurd it can be.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is possibly one of the most accessible turn based RPGs I've ever played. It's a little easy yeah but if you don't play that kinda stuff much but want to give it a try this is a great start. Though naturally being a South Park game it hinges on how much you like the TV show and more importantly, its sense of humour.

As much as I want to recommend XCOM 2 it is HARD. I don't just mean "steep learning curve" hard, I mean "play for 20 hours but have to restart because you backed yourself into a corner" hard. That being said if you're willing to give it a shot and endure some of the BS thrown your way you can play one of the best Turn Based Strategy games of the past few years.

Not sure how you feel about character action games (games like Devil May Cry where you pull off combos 'n stuff) but NieR Automata's story is excellent, to the point where I'd recommend it even if you're not a fan of those kind of games. Just... it takes a while to get to the good stuff.

Last but certainly not least is Yakuza 0. Yeah it may have a slow start and yeeeeah there may be no English dub and yeeeeeeeeah it doesn't really fall under anything you like except for good story (and RPG elements I suppose) but damnit it's one of my favorite games ever so I'll never stop shilling it. If you have an itch for an ostentatious, story focused 3D brawler set in an (small) open-world Japan with a plethora of bonkers side activities then look no further!

Oh and just in case you still have your Wii I recommend the No More Heroes games, there's nothing else quite like them anywhere else...

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

@theluthier Cheers for the feedback! Adjustments have been made, I hope they're enough.

Trust me, hearing that was a God send. I was concerned I'd have to spend out on like a £500 class just to figure this stuff out but glad to know I can learn it the old fashioned way.

Thanks again for the reassurance there. Like I said, this whole CG thing was basically my plan A, B and C, 'cause I haven't the faintest clue what else I'd do, so I think my best bet is to just charge full steam ahead and make something happen, or become really disappointed trying lol.

EDIT: Actually looking at my old render and this one there doesn't seem to be much difference around the legs, I just kinda shifted the weight up a bit. Well, guess I'll be adjusting that!

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective I took a look at the mouth and I think your friend has a point, kinda looks like he's opened it too much and there is so much tension it might snap of, if you know what I mean? So perhaps moving the lower jab up, making the gap smaller, will improve the look significantly. That's the feeling I have about it 😊

If I were you (and I'm not so feel free to ignore me completely 😉) I would focus on the details this last day as you said you might do. Retopo and fur takes a long time I think, and since your not done with making him the way you want him to look in the end maybe not the best way to spend your time. Else you have to retopo him later after class again because you were not done sculpting...

Veryyyy curious to see if my guess was right so I'll be on the lookout in the gallery to see when it pops up 😎

You're doing great Aaron! Keep up the good work 😄👍🏻

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thecabbagedetective Thanks for the suggestions!! I've copied them all and some time after class I will go onto YouTube, find some trailers and gameplay videos, see what speaks to me most 😬 I think there's some good stuff in there!

Also want to mention I've thrown that horrible WII in the thrash and hope never to see it again. Sweeping controller, yuk 😑

EDIT: already watched videos of your top tier games because I was curious, Persona 5 is a game after my heart!! Though the setting is totally different, the feeling I got was the same as with the 'tales of' series.. and that one is awesome!! Can't wait to get my hands on that one. Top of my birthday wish list 😬😬

    Homework Submission Week 3

Well, gonna have to call it a week here. Really hoped I coulda done more but this was a week I was meant to be taking easy (aka playing XCOM 2) so I'll be going back to this sometime after class. Seeing as I was advised by ssmurfmier1985 to not pursue the retopo and fur due to the time it would take I instead focused my time on adding a few details, touching up proportions and putting the bear into a pose, which without rigging is... annoying.

Here's a close up of his mug. I feel like I coulda put more detail into the gum but I think for now it looks decent.

I decided to not really adjust the primitives exercise. It's not perfect by any means (cube could be more sharp, same with the cone though I quite like it with the curved tip personally) but I think it's good enough.

I tried uploading the Melvin sculpt to Sketchfab but it's not working for me for some reason so I'll upload it tomorrow. For reference though here's the original exercise I did which was 4 months ago apparently, jeez. Time flies. Naturally I wouldn't want that counted for my homework though so the redone version should be here by midnight Monday, I'll update this post.

I don't have a turntable for you today I'm afraid, but I was messing around with the rotate tool and found this oddly hilarious so maybe you'll get a chuckle out of it too.

With that being done I hope you've all learnt quite a bit this week, sorry again for being rather inactive and not being too helpful but I'm hoping to pick up the slack in the upcoming week. Have a good one!

EDIT: Melvin 2.0 is done! The Sketchfab link goes here but just for old times sake here's a rendered version!

You can probably tell I like experimenting with lighting...

In an attempt to one-up my original, not only did I go off reference only and not watch the tutorial, I managed to get this done in a couple of hours as opposed to the entire day the original did (there's a link up above to my original one) whilst also adding extra details. Sometimes when learning skills you feel like you're never getting anywhere but simply looking back can do wonders for morale. Don't get me wrong it's far from perfect, but I truly believe I've made strides.

With that being said I wish you all a goodnight and to have a good one, come tomorrow I'll have absolutely no Blender work whatsoever (unless I decide to touch up on the primitives) so I'll spend my time catching up on the individual threads and see what I've missed and possibly helping a couple of you out. See ya!

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Trust me I was keeping track of that game since it got announced in 2013, when I finally got my hands on it 4 years later hoo boy that was a fortnight well spent.

I'd also recommend World of Final Fantasy. It's cutsey, has a Kingdom Hearts-esque aesthetic to it and has a weird "stacking" system where you capture creatures ala Pokemon and then stack them on top of each others heads. Yeah, like I said, odd. Fun though!
