SYLLABUS

Vehicle model by Chris Kuhn on blendwap.com

Welcome to the CGCookie Class: Vehicle Modeling with Blender! Here by popular demand, this class is designed to be a holistic learning experience about the art of modeling vehicles. If you’re diligent in watching all content and hitting homework deadlines, by the end of the class you'll be prepared to build digital vehicles to your heart's content! This is an intermediate-to-advanced class which means you’ll do best by having some experience with Blender and 3D modeling before committing to this class.

This is the third "Class" format where Citizen members are invited to focus together on a particular topic/skill for a month. Participation looks like this:

  • RSVP and attend the Live Events
  • Watch the courses outlined below
  • Ask questions
  • Submit homework
  • Generally be active in this thread

WHEN? The class will take place from June 4th through July 2nd (ish)

✅WEEK 1: Hard Surface Primer (June 4 - 10)

Abstract: Vehicle modeling is pure hard surface modeling. Therefore it's important to be proficient with general polygon modeling techniques. This first week we're ramping into this particular modeling skillset to prepare us for the vehicle modeling extravaganza to come!

Goal of the Week: Level-up and/or dust off your hard-surface modeling skills.

Pre-recorded course to watch:

Week 1 Live Event (Remember to RSVP!)

Homework:

✅WEEK 2: Vehicle Exterior Modeling (June 11 - 17)

Abstract: When I say "Imagine a vehicle" I'll bet a million dollars you're thinking about the exterior. And that's why the exterior is important. It defines everything about a vehicle's visual perception: Style, utility, purpose. This week we're going to build a vehicle exterior based on concepts like building to scale and building from blueprints.

Goal of the Week: Build the exterior of your chosen vehicle based on blueprints. This will be good practice in strict adherence to orthographic front/side/back/top view modeling.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Week 2 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model the exterior of you chosen vehicle [post images and/or a Sketchfab embed]

✅WEEK 3: Vehicle Interior Modeling (June 18 - 24)

Model by Neubi on blendswap.com

Abstract: The insides of vehicles involve more organic, soft shapes as well as opportunity for lots of fine hard surface details. Often vehicles renders focus on the exterior where the interior can be hidden or approximated. But not in this class!

Goal of the Week: Model the interior of your chosen vehicle to gain experience with fine hard-surface details in a confined space.

Pre-recorded courses to watch: Admittedly we don't have much in this context specifically...

Week 3 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model the interior of you chosen vehicle [post images and/or a Sketchfab embed]
  • OR if you didn't finish your vehicle exterior from week 2 or didn't have time to fine tune it as much as you wanted, you can choose to do that for week 3 and skip the interior. Just understand that I will grade you based on how much visible difference there is between your week 2 and week 3 submissions. In other words, if it looks like you barely did anything on your exterior for week 3 you'll get a lower grade.

✅WEEK 4: Vehicle Concept Sculpting (June 25 - July 1)

Abstract: There's another facet of vehicle modeling that doesn't involve strict adherence to blueprints. Instead, Concept Sculpting is about designing a vehicle from scratch using the artistic approach of digital sculpting. This can be an extremely fun, experimental method for creating unique vehicles.

Goal of the Week: Sculpt a vehicle exterior from scratch; Practice hard-surface sculpting techniques.

Pre-recorded courses to watch: Again we don't have much in this context specifically, but we have a couple courses that cover hard-surface sculpting in general:

Week 4 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Sculpt a unique concept vehicle [post images and/or a Sketchfab embed]

✅WEEK 5: Class Wrap-Up (Early July)

Also by popular demand, we'll be doing a 5th live stream to close out the class, review week 4 homework, and possibly a special guest vehicle modeling guru. Once I get confirmation on that guest I'll add the Live Event to the calendar.

Hark! June is here.

  • Thibaut Bourbon(tbrbn) replied

michallis Sweet, I love the curved front grid ! Great job too with the exhaust pipes :)

  • Michallis Pashidis(michallis) replied

tbrbn Thank you Thibaut, was my first model task ever :p (besides the cgcookie lessons). I learned a lot thanks to you all.

  • Kent Trammell replied

dieedi Zeppelin's are a pretty simple shape. You can try but I would say sculpting in this case is overkill.

One note on the lighting: Make sure it's bright enough! I'd hate for any of that glorious vehicle modeling to be hidden in shadow.

  • Kent Trammell replied

dostovel Wow, 8+ years old - sounds like it was way ahead of its time!

    HOMEWORK SUBMISSION WEEK 3

Well this was a journey. A journey to truly discover how  useless my GPU is. When CPU rendering is faster by a landslide, you got a problem.

Overall I'm quite proud  of what I've created, most of my problems stem from the materials not being great or the sculpting being a bit haphazard (though I had to turn down the multiresolution so they looked much better initially) but I think with the time I had and my level of experience I did a good job.

I also meant to render this one but it crashed during the night so an OpenGL will have to do:

Sketchfab link goes here. Well it would, if it would upload. Taking approximately an eternity so I'll edit this post when it finally works. Had to disable all solidify modifiers and tone down the subsurf and multiresolution even more to get it on so apologies if it isn't the smoothest.

EDIT: Here it is for now: https://skfb.ly/6zTCW Not entirely sure why but the front seats are missing, but I think I've fixed it and will update when it's properly done. Though in terms of topology they're the exact same as the back seats.

Overall this was a great exercise, I just hope I'm in time for grading, stream stuff etc before next week begins. Wish you all the best in this week and the next!

  • Kent Trammell replied

silentheart00 Could you provide a download link to your scene file? I'd like to try and fix that during the stream today.

  • Kent Trammell replied

ssilenthans Fantastic progress! Your shapes are smooth, edges/details are crispy.  I underestimated the time it would take on my interior and thus I'm not finished either. But I know the kind of effort it takes to get this far and given the high quality, you've earned an A this week 👍

  • Kent Trammell replied

jack07 Nice job, Jack. The HUD textures are a great touch. Overall the interior reads slightly simplified, to your point about not having enough time, but the HUD makes that less noticeable. And the style still matches the rest of your vehicle. You've still earned an A in my book 👍

  • Kent Trammell replied

ddoulos4iesou Yes, I'd like everyone to sculpt another vehicle - ideally a unique design not based on explicit reference/blueprints. I'll go over the details of the assignment in the stream today.

  • Kent Trammell replied

mmrdojo Haha I felt that way at the end of the yesterday, after I'd spent hours modeling a few interior details 😅

  • Kent Trammell replied

michallis Absolutely beautiful work, Michallis. The whole vehicle turned out great. All those details are 🤩

I noticed a little faceting in the sketchfab that seems like an easy fix:

Looks like too many edges cut in the region resulting in noticeable facets/ridging. It's a small note. Besides that this is top-quality. Awesome job: A 👏

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

thecabbagedetective Ugh twice I've uploaded it to Sketchfab now and there's been issues. Hopefully third time's the charm.

  • Kent Trammell replied

thecabbagedetective What. A. Result! Seriously, this turned out so well. The lighting and materials take it an extra mile too. So many details in all corners of this interior. It's impressive that you were able to build so many. You clearly put a LOT of work in this week.

My one note is that the leather sculpt details aren't reading great, which you mentioned. But it's a minor note given the quality of everything else. You've earned an A+ for sure! 👏

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

@theluthier Thank you very much! Yeah there were some good ones like stretching around the corners of the seats but the decreased multiresolution made them disappear, and only left the ugly ones (which, to be fair, shouldn't have been there to begin with). I presume you saw but just in case I finally uploaded it to sketchfab with one... "minor" flaw if you were interested in seeing it, I put it in my original post.

I must've worked at least 8 hours every day for the past week on this, so much so I haven't really had much time to do anything else haha. Well, this is what 5 months of studying Blender has got me so I'm really looking forward to what the incoming years have to offer, thank you once again!

  • Kent Trammell replied

csehz Whoops, nearly missed this one in the shuffle. Good work, Zsolt! Interiors are a ton of work as I've learned first hand this week as well. Indeed the shapes are a little on the simple side, but they're still comprehensive (pedals, shifter, console, steering wheel, etc). It's an A in my book 👍

  • martin lisen(martinlisen) replied

Hi, I've finish the car exterior modeling. What do you think about it ? Thanks for your comments

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

    mmartinlisen Holy f-...

Like don't get my wrong, the modeling is top notch, but the materials and presentation just makes this... just *so* good. I'll be honest, I'm jealous as hell, but this is an amazing job. How long you been doing Blender?

  • Kent Trammell replied

    mmartinlisen Yeah...that's pretty great. A+ 😅

  • Bauke Post(baukepost) replied

mmartinlisen Love it! One minor note: In can see some imperfections in the surface of the car (almost impossible to avoid), you could try changing the highlights a bit with Photoshop.

  • mrdojo replied

still have a few days needed to model the interior + extra details but so far im really satisfied with my progress. I would say the vehicle is about 75% finished. You guys are awesome for supporting each other.
