Welcome to the CGCookie Class: Vehicle Modeling with Blender! Here by popular demand, this class is designed to be a holistic learning experience about the art of modeling vehicles. If you’re diligent in watching all content and hitting homework deadlines, by the end of the class you'll be prepared to build digital vehicles to your heart's content! This is an intermediate-to-advanced class which means you’ll do best by having some experience with Blender and 3D modeling before committing to this class.
This is the third "Class" format where Citizen members are invited to focus together on a particular topic/skill for a month. Participation looks like this:
WHEN? The class will take place from June 4th through July 2nd (ish)
Abstract: Vehicle modeling is pure hard surface modeling. Therefore it's important to be proficient with general polygon modeling techniques. This first week we're ramping into this particular modeling skillset to prepare us for the vehicle modeling extravaganza to come!
Goal of the Week: Level-up and/or dust off your hard-surface modeling skills.
Pre-recorded course to watch:
Week 1 Live Event (Remember to RSVP!)
Homework:
Abstract: When I say "Imagine a vehicle" I'll bet a million dollars you're thinking about the exterior. And that's why the exterior is important. It defines everything about a vehicle's visual perception: Style, utility, purpose. This week we're going to build a vehicle exterior based on concepts like building to scale and building from blueprints.
Goal of the Week: Build the exterior of your chosen vehicle based on blueprints. This will be good practice in strict adherence to orthographic front/side/back/top view modeling.
Pre-recorded courses to watch:
Week 2 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)
Homework:
Model by Neubi on blendswap.com
Abstract: The insides of vehicles involve more organic, soft shapes as well as opportunity for lots of fine hard surface details. Often vehicles renders focus on the exterior where the interior can be hidden or approximated. But not in this class!
Goal of the Week: Model the interior of your chosen vehicle to gain experience with fine hard-surface details in a confined space.
Pre-recorded courses to watch: Admittedly we don't have much in this context specifically...
Week 3 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)
Homework:
Abstract: There's another facet of vehicle modeling that doesn't involve strict adherence to blueprints. Instead, Concept Sculpting is about designing a vehicle from scratch using the artistic approach of digital sculpting. This can be an extremely fun, experimental method for creating unique vehicles.
Goal of the Week: Sculpt a vehicle exterior from scratch; Practice hard-surface sculpting techniques.
Pre-recorded courses to watch: Again we don't have much in this context specifically, but we have a couple courses that cover hard-surface sculpting in general:
Week 4 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)
Homework:
This thread is reserved for CG Cookie Citizens that are participating in the "Vehicle Modeling with Blender" class. Its purpose is to serve as central communication for all participating Citizens (excluding Hobby plan Citizens) to ask Kent and fellow participants questions and to post homework. As the instructor of the class, Kent will be monitoring this thread on a daily basis (especially Mon-Thurs) throughout the month of June to review homework and answer questions.
Free members are welcome to observe the thread but please respect that communication is reserved for Citizens.
adsb2035 This is the kinda stuff I wanna do and attempting that alongside modeling the entire interior within a week is admirable, good to hear you're making progress too. Similar to the advice you gave oboshape you definitely shouldn't give up, but hey, even after the class is finished your model will always be there so who's not to say you can't go back to it and push it to the next level? That's what I'll be doing too, once I actually know what I'm doing regarding sculpting and shading.
baukepost Dash fill. That is a difficult one, the model looks used but well maintained. This makes me feel it would be an official vehicle of sorts, police/Army. Having served in the armed forces there is very little in terms of technological advances when it comes to gauges. They just needed to be clear enough for concise information, robust enough to withstand the harshness of war and quickly replaced if they failed.
Homework Submission Week 3
References were a bit scarce, but managed to pull it off. I have suspicions that it's a millitary version of interior, but I liked it nonetheless.
I changed the bed of the truck, closed it off, so basically no underfaces are visible from the bottom, and also fixed some wheels. Here is interior preview, working on uploading to sketchfab as we speak/read/write.
I will either edit or reply to the comment with sketchfab link. Depends how deep it will get burried in this couple of minutes.
Sketchfab
One question: I'm not sure if report card means anything, but I have F first week for blueprint submission, I did post 2 links to a site, but did not define which vehicle I will be doing, is that the problem or should I post a screenshot of blueprints in blender ortho views?
Homework submission week 3
PS: As you can see there's no Sketchfab link; my model wouldn't upload. I'll try again tomorrow.
Homework submission week 3
Good lord that feels endless ! Won't be able to work on it tomorrow so I'll keep it up later. I need to finish/redo the seats, I'm not super happy with their shape, plus the seatbelts are missing. That and some extra panelling on the doors.
Quite happy with the rest however ! (right click and open the images on new tab for better res')
Homework Submission Week 3
Well my conclusion after finishing the car exterior/interior modelling - I learnt a lot and still know nothing.. :D
But before anything what is the huge benefit of the class system, inspite of having around zero time to Blender by the opinion of the rational mind, in the last month somehow I modelled everyday!! Which is an amazing success personally how to spare time to loved things.
Regarding this car interior it took again more efforts than thought, seeing the other models probably for the most of you guys these are relatively simple shapes as finally just the inside of a matchbox, but for me was not easy at all. Surely also it requires some work yet but so that came out in three weeks time.
Next time will come back again stronger for the shading course as read somewhere it is planned, by that time will do at least one diamond junction as this car doesn't have such yet :-)
Anyhow, before of the class I was quite sceptic that would be able to model a car, but this something really being similiar to a car and even to a Taxi Checker :D

wow theres some really sweet work everyone, really nice to look at and follow what you all have now and your progress through the weeks ;)
baukepost Wow... just... wow...
Not sure if I should feel encouraged or disheartened to be honest, but either way that's phenomenal!
tbrbn Damn I'm really loving those panels, I really hope you return to it and complete because this looks amazing as is, so surely it could only be improved it. Absolutely great.
csehz I'm liking it! I hope you shade your taxi in the shading class, I'd love to see that thing with the stripes on it! Glad to hear that you did better than you expected, I think that's the case for a lot of us. A deadline and a bit of structure can do wonders for us.
swikni Woah, we've barely heard anything out of you this week and you just drop this bombshell on us?! I love the sculpting on the gearstick especially. I hope you decide to render this with an HDRI at some point, could look amazing.
shiennar Daaaang those are some sleek models! Really like how you managed to add the logo on the steering wheel too. Hopefully that car shading class comes to fruition so you can take this to the next level!
vvlado159 Oops, missed this one. I feel you with the scare references - at least initially - but you've done a damn good job with what you had. I really like the robust simplicity of the steering wheel, I hope you'll consider shading this one day.
Homework Submission Week 3
This was more difficult than the exterior. So many tiny details, and the usual having to start some objects over again a couple of times while I was finding out how to make a thing or create this or that effect. I have learned a lot, but I feel like I have to now keep modeling stuff regularly or some of these tricks will atrophy in my brain.
Anyway, here it is.
All right so next week is concept sculpting right? Looking forward to it for sure after this.
jakeblended I wanna give up, this is just... wow. You even did some furry dice oh my Lord, this is just utterly fantastic. How long have you been doing Blender may I ask?
thecabbagedetective I started seriously in November. I tried poking at it earlier than that - I think I did the famous Donut Tutorial a year ago or so - but it never went anywhere and I never retained anything. Everything I know solidly about Blender today comes from courses I've done here since November. :)
I think the renders might give the impression of more skill than I have; it's really all materials. I think Kent's idea for an automotive shading class is an excellent idea because every single final model posted by anyone in this thread would look unbelievable with some materials TLC.
jakeblended Damn you haven't been at this much more that me, I really gotta step my game up haha. I guess that may be true about the materials, as in the shader forge it's proven that a good model can look bad without proper shading and vice versa, but ignoring the materials your attention to detail is marvelous, you even modeled the speedometer!
thecabbagedetective I think that's just me having more time on my hands than you, heh.
I think tbrbn might edge me out in the detail department though. The inside of his truck looks like an airplane cockpit. I like the CB radio. And so many gauges - I know it's based on photographs and I can't help but wonder what all the gauges are for; surely a big truck can't be that much more mechanically complicated than a car?
This back bumper is looking great! I'm going to remodel the front a little bit. After looking through some more references, it doesn't make sense with how it is now. I'm a week behind. Oh well. The things we juggle through life...
