Vehicle model by Chris Kuhn on blendwap.com
Welcome to the CGCookie Class: Vehicle Modeling with Blender! Here by popular demand, this class is designed to be a holistic learning experience about the art of modeling vehicles. If you’re diligent in watching all content and hitting homework deadlines, by the end of the class you'll be prepared to build digital vehicles to your heart's content! This is an intermediate-to-advanced class which means you’ll do best by having some experience with Blender and 3D modeling before committing to this class.
This is the third "Class" format where Citizen members are invited to focus together on a particular topic/skill for a month. Participation looks like this:
WHEN? The class will take place from June 4th through July 2nd (ish)
Abstract: Vehicle modeling is pure hard surface modeling. Therefore it's important to be proficient with general polygon modeling techniques. This first week we're ramping into this particular modeling skillset to prepare us for the vehicle modeling extravaganza to come!
Goal of the Week: Level-up and/or dust off your hard-surface modeling skills.
Pre-recorded course to watch:
Week 1 Live Event (Remember to RSVP!)
Homework:
Abstract: When I say "Imagine a vehicle" I'll bet a million dollars you're thinking about the exterior. And that's why the exterior is important. It defines everything about a vehicle's visual perception: Style, utility, purpose. This week we're going to build a vehicle exterior based on concepts like building to scale and building from blueprints.
Goal of the Week: Build the exterior of your chosen vehicle based on blueprints. This will be good practice in strict adherence to orthographic front/side/back/top view modeling.
Pre-recorded courses to watch:
Week 2 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)
Homework:
Model by Neubi on blendswap.com
Abstract: The insides of vehicles involve more organic, soft shapes as well as opportunity for lots of fine hard surface details. Often vehicles renders focus on the exterior where the interior can be hidden or approximated. But not in this class!
Goal of the Week: Model the interior of your chosen vehicle to gain experience with fine hard-surface details in a confined space.
Pre-recorded courses to watch: Admittedly we don't have much in this context specifically...
Week 3 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)
Homework:
Abstract: There's another facet of vehicle modeling that doesn't involve strict adherence to blueprints. Instead, Concept Sculpting is about designing a vehicle from scratch using the artistic approach of digital sculpting. This can be an extremely fun, experimental method for creating unique vehicles.
Goal of the Week: Sculpt a vehicle exterior from scratch; Practice hard-surface sculpting techniques.
Pre-recorded courses to watch: Again we don't have much in this context specifically, but we have a couple courses that cover hard-surface sculpting in general:
Week 4 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)
Homework:
This thread is reserved for CG Cookie Citizens that are participating in the "Vehicle Modeling with Blender" class. Its purpose is to serve as central communication for all participating Citizens (excluding Hobby plan Citizens) to ask Kent and fellow participants questions and to post homework. As the instructor of the class, Kent will be monitoring this thread on a daily basis (especially Mon-Thurs) throughout the month of June to review homework and answer questions.
Free members are welcome to observe the thread but please respect that communication is reserved for Citizens.
jakeblended I did the opposite and tried to model something as difficult as possible, just to challenge myself and learn as much as possible. And what could be more difficult than a futuristic tank?
BLOCKING
Hello, i couldn't wait to start, so i put my hands on the blend and let it flow.
The very beggining was difficult and i scratched my head more than one time, just like "where to start ?"
This is a rough blocking stage, not yet achieved.
Shapes, topology, edge flow, etc. are bad for now, but i now have something to work on.
The most dificult is putting the first surfaces .
I put colors to show the diferent pieces/sub-mehses. All edge modeling.
I like to stay in flat shading at t his stage of project.
Well, that was the first session on the blocking :-)
These blueprints are defenitively not enough to make detailed work for cars, in my humble opinion.
In fact, they are not "real" blueprints, but simplified ones.
So here's my unachieved blocking.
Personally, i can work on the project 3 to 4 hours / day, a bit more the week end.
I hope it will be enough and will manage to achieve it. That's also why i wanted to work on it today.
Here the skectchfab
renault 16
Nice to see the variety of choices, it will make an awesome car collection in the end !
Thanks TheLuthier !
How can the curve between the lines appear to have an angle the further right you go, when the edgeloops does not?
Homewrok BC3-1806 Week 1
I chose a new Grand Scenic for modeling as it has so many weird shapes and that makes it challenging. :)
ssilenthans Good to see you in this class, Hans! I love your airplane render. That Mercedes-Benz makes me think of Indiana Jones for some reason lol. It's an A this week - good job 👍
nneilnico Good job with the primitives exercise! I'll keep an eye out for your blueprint and airplane 👀
jakeblended Great job on the airplane(s)! It totally counts for you to overlap the primitive shapes. I'm quite impressed at how recognizable it is.
Good choice with the classic Chevy pickup. We have a decent amount of classics so far - I dig it 🤘No worries about not starting yet. Those who have started are straight over-achieving. Even I feel behind haha!
It's an A this week Jake.
llollito_larkham This is an excellent start and blockout! Your edgeflow is quite even and organized. I'd feel great about the progress if I were you.
The blueprint should be good enough to get you ~80% there. Since it's a real vehicle, collecting some photos will take you the remaining ~20%
aarev You sorta answered your own question with those lines imo. Just make your edge go that direction. Break the gridded format and slant that bottom row of edges upward. Does that make sense?
tthepainter I've not heard of the Grand Scenic from Renault. Cool design! And nice job on the airplane. Let me know if you end up doing the primitive exercise.
I have to say this car modeling has been like a boxer, that has KO'd a fair share of opponents, and now is fighting a contender that just found out a weak spot on his defense stance and now all the punches our going through and he is getting massacred. My car is just a wobbly mess.
And @wesburke "Delete it and start over" advice really comes across when you realize you could spend hours tweaking and tweaking vertices and it is not going to make a difference, you have to delete it and start over. On to my fourth iteration.
Homework B3-1806 Week 1
Airplane :
Sketchfab ate my cycles materials, and my gauges and one of the rivet paths, but I learned quite a few neat tricks from that series.
Primitives :
Simple Bridge made with primitives
I'm going to try modeling an Austin Healy 3000 MkII, here's a blueprint;
I also found some reference photos for the interior over at automobile-catalog.com
Looking forward to blocking it out tomorrow morning.
dostovel Amen to that. thought i'd just continue with the old blockout i had done.. yeah. three tries later i think i have something that i can work with. :D
Homework B3-1806 Week 1
The airplane's kicking my butt! I'll keep poking at it and try to get it in by the deadline.
This was a lot of fun for me having constraints to work within. I had lots of ideas, but I thought a garden would be the most successful. I would've like to put more stuff in it, but that damn grass took for-freaking-ever, so I moved on. At least it doesn't look overly barren. Might poke at it a little more and add more things.
Vehicle - Dodge Challenger
I like Challengers, and I thought the body would look really cool with the custom paint job.
References for the stripes.
Interior references.
I couldn't figure out how to get the rivets to show up in my final render! They showed up for the previews though. Any ideas? :P
For my vehicle, I chose the Dartz Prombron. I'm super excited to participate in the class :)
