2.8 Hurdles and Roadblocks

Wayne Dixon

Hey everyone,

With the upcoming release of Blender 2.8 (approx 6 weeks according to Blender.Today) we are trying to put together a list of useful trouble shooting tips for new users to 2.8 and we could use your help.

Have you already been using 2.8 and found yourself scratching your head or trying to figure out a seemly simple thing but it took you HOURS to solve?

Wouldn't it be nice if you helped someone avoid the same trap you fell into.

What kind of stuff are we talking about?

Well not the "Hey where has this button has moved" type of stuff, we're already all over that.

We're talking more like "My collection is hidden and greyed out but the eyeball icon says it visible - what's going on!?"

Turns out that you have the collection "disabled" in the viewport, but that toggle isn't visible in the outliner because that filter is not enabled.

Or "Weight paint mode no longer has the coloured weights visible when painting."

This is now an 'overlay' feature and when you opened your old 2.7 file that setting just happens to be disabled. (but in a new file it is enabled)

What have you noticed?

We have noticed a few weird behaviors can happen when you open old files.

If you have a tip, or have stumbled over a weird problem that should have been easy to solve, especially when opening your old files, then let us know!

We'd like to be able to help others and stop them from beating their head against a brick wall.

Of course, some bugs like this one, are more difficult to find. As I got the notification. But at least now we know it's definitely not as simple as where you put the tags. And that was the whole point. :)

  • Markus Berg(thebergh) replied

spikeyxxx To be more fair, there were two tags on the same line by ssmurfmier1985 and if it still works, then I guess there's not much more we can do for now.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

thebergh the last notification I didn’t get, so maybe tagging 2 people in only line is an issue

  • smurfmier1985 replied

    thebergh another test.

Wondering if it works when you tag later. spikeyxxx hi spikey

  • Markus Berg(thebergh) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Interesting. I guess we're on to something here. :)

  • spikeyxxx replied

    ssmurfmier1985 Didn't get a notification this time

  • spikeyxxx replied

Let's try this: tagging two people, but both at the beginning of a paragraph.

    thebergh Hi Markus!

    And of course.

    ssmurfmier1985 Hi Miranda!

  • Markus Berg(thebergh) replied

    spikeyxxx I got a notification.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

spikeyxxx Only got the notification for the message that you didn’t got a notification..

Curiouser and curiouser I'd say, forgetting about my grammar;)

So I am trying out eevee to render some effects that will be added to an image in Photoshop.

Below you can see the viewport render that has a black plane behind it , this is what I am looking for but with transparency rather than black.

If I delete the black plane and enable "transparent" in the film settings of the render properties. I get exactly what I want in the viewport render :

However , when I render out the actual image , I get this :

I can only assume this is down to there not being any black in the scene to show the lighting or glare , or perhaps I have something wrong in the render settings?

    Can anybody help out please?

    Thanks in advance

  • Wayne Dixon replied

Do you have a link to your file, frikkr ?

That could be a render setting, could be a limitation, could be a bug or it could even be a 'feature'.

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

    Hi @waylow , thanks

Here is the link to the dropbox folder with the link in it

  • spikeyxxx replied

    Hi frikkr !

This is indeed because there is no background to show the glare. If you composite the render over a black background you'll see that the glow is still there;)

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

Thanks spikeyxxx , it works in the compositor as you say , I tested it below :

However , I still need it with an alpha background rather than the black so I can use it in Photoshop. But if I remove the black background and save the image , and then drop it into Photoshop , I get this :

Is the blue bloom being calculated and added in the compositor after the render is complete? How do I save this out with an alpha background with the blue bloom showing?

    Cheers!

  • spikeyxxx replied

Apparently, you'll have to render it without the bloom and then add it in the Compositor like so:

    This is explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=190&v=G6GspGFtCbE

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

ahh great spikeyxxx , thats exactly what I need . I didn't think of that , I was assuming that there was a simple explanation since what is the point in having a bloom setting in the render if it doesn't actually render it out - perhaps just as a visual aid but still a bit strange.
Anyways , I can get on with my project now, much appreciated:)

  • Wayne Dixon replied

    spikeyxxx , you're a champion!

    Keep it up.

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

I'm not sure if this is a 2.8 specific issue , but I've never come across it before in a previous version of Blender so for now i'll post it here

My bevel tool is doing all sorts of strange things today. You can see what I mean from the screenshots below , along with the macro window with all the bevel settings (which I have played about with , but with no success)

At first I thought it was the object I was beveling , perhaps some incorrect normals , or un-applied transforms. But even on a default cylinder , added straight to the world centre , and immediately beveled yields the same issue.  (Shown in second image below)

As usual , it will no doubt be something obvious, but I can't for the life of me figure it out and it is holding me back as I use the bevel tool a lot in my modelling....

Any help would be hugely appreciated :)

  • Wayne Dixon replied

hmm - I'll see if I can dig into that one this afternoon.
Thanks for posting the settings on your screen shot :)
