Lesson 00: Course Overview

Introduction to CONCEPT, A Blender Class of Character Creation.

Welcome to CONCEPT - A course all about creating a single piece of concept art using Blender's Grease Pencil. The subject is LUNA, a character I designed for Wayne Dixon's course RIG.

This course is divided into four chapters covering the main stages of creating concept art.

  • Chapter 1: Brief, research, and ideation
  • Chapter 2: Color theory and asset creation
  • Chapter 3: Thumbnailing and refining idea
  • Chapter 4: Final concept production

This course assumes a working knowledge of Blender Basics and Grease Pencil.

Not all tools will be explained, but new techniques will be discussed in detail. If you're new to Grease Pencil, I highly recommend first taking my course DRAW! It is entirely free, and will give you a solid grounding for using Grease Pencil.

By the end of this course, you should have a good understanding of:

  • How to interpret a brief
  • The basics of color theory
  • Where to find inspiration for research
  • How to thumbnail
  • How to explore ideas visually
  • How to discuss development with a client
  • How to produce a polished piece

While you can follow the steps and use the working files provided, I highly encourage you to apply the knowledge and methods demonstrated here to your own concepts.
