BC1-1908 Homework - Ingrid Frank

Collaborations

This is the thread where all my sketches and WIPs will be posted in :)

I want to finish chapter 1 of the treasure chest tutorial first and will start to post progress for my homework afterwards.

I decided to model the sword and I want to make it in a WOWish style.

Some deathknight runeswords I want to use as reference:

@fide that looks great with the shaders and the floor planks now, the rim light also give it a nice accent, great work

  • Jack (jack07) replied

@fide WHOA!! That mimic looks awesome!!! Now it needs arms and legs ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    Congrats!!

  • John Fluet(cthulusan) replied

@fide Oh my that came out nice!  Fantastic work on the sword but that tongue is something else.  Great work.

  • Ingrid Frank(Fide) replied

    spikeyxxx Thank you very much!

ssmurfmier1985 Thanks, I´m very happy how it turned out x3

brzostek I do like the chest more and put more effort into it, to be honest... (:

n647  I had the feeling the left site was too much in shadow without it

jack07 A mimic that can chase and grab you? What could go wrong?   *nasty DarkSouls flashbacks*

ccthulusan Thank you! The shader did miracles to the look of the tongue!

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

@fide damn, that will give me nightmares. :D awesome!

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

@fide Well that something does not represent the aesthetics to I accustomed typically :D, but it looks awesome Ingrid . Brilliant job after a long road

  • Matthew Ullrey(ullreym) replied

@fide Beautiful (scary) work! I can just imagine you animating the mimic chest eating the sword or better yet, swinging it around with its tongue. Ha ha. Great job!

  • smurfmier1985 replied

    ullreym mimic chest big hug:

  • Jennifer De Graaff(justjenn) replied

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

@fide Absolutely spectacular, I don't really know what else to say. Great job!

  • Paul Haynes(paulhaynes1955) replied

    Good job.

  • Kent Trammell replied

@fide I never expected the chest to be a "mimic" - very cool! Nor was I aware of mimics till this. Such an effective final result. Well done, Ingrid! 👏

This surprised me so much I nearly jumped back in my seat as I scrolled down. The lighting is nice; I love the strong back/rim light. And it's a decent amount of extra work for the teeth, mouth and tongue interior - looks awesome. I'm quite impressed. It's an A+ from me this week.

I only have a couple notes to offer:

    • Non-metallic material for metal pieces. It appears that the metallic setting for the metal portions is at zero but the spec is turned up. The result that the seemingly metal portions aren't metallic. Was this an artistic choice?

    • Coins feel out of place. The scene has a strong sense of action which makes the coins feel lifeless and unnatural as they sit evenly spaced on the ground. I like the motivation to include the coins for a warmer accent color but I think they'd serve better if they were flipping through the air. Perhaps as if they're like "slobber" from the mimics "mouth"? When the mimic springs open its "mouth" a handful of gold coins go flying!

A change like that would incorporate the coins better into the action imo. If you prefer not to do that, I'd recommend organizing more of them into piles like these image:

I really had a blast this whole course, learned A LOT and am really proud of my result :D Thank you very much for the class, Kent! I´m looking forward to the next one!

I'm so glad to see this feedback. Thanks for sharing  :)

@theluthier Sorry for the late reply, I had a stressful week D:

    • The non-metal material was a mistake. I fiddled so much with the shader settings, that I must have gotten something mixed up.
    • I like the idea with the coins flipping. I will try to make them fly through the air :D
