Welcome to the CGCookie Class: Shading & Lighting with Blender! The art of shading and lighting your Blender scenes and models can make or break your renders. It's a very important - even enlightening - skill to develop as a 3D artist.
This "Class" format invites all Citizen members to focus together on a particular topic/skill for a month. Participation looks like this:
WHEN? The class will take place from October 1st - Oct 30th.
Abstract: There are some core concepts to lighting and shading (S&L) that need to be understood first. Things like global illumination, render engines, shaders, materials, and node networks some of the things we will be over-viewing this first week. I
Goal of the Week: Familiarize (or re-familiarize) ourselves with core S&L concepts.

Abstract: The Eevee render engine is the latest and greatest rendering tech in Blender and we're going to stretch its legs for week 2. The subject is going to be a sports car, but any vehicle will do. After all many of us spent this past June modeling vehicles and we're eager to get them lit and pretty!
Some topics we'll cover along the way include materials like car paint, rubber, metal, and leather along with HDRI environment lighting.

Abstract: Character lighting is a very intentional art and how to do it well is often a mystery. This week we'll look at how to develop striking character renders, build simple materials that accentuate your model, and even the concept "painting" you character with light for surreal effects.

This thread is reserved for CG Cookie Citizens that are participating in the "Shading & Lighting with Blender" class. Its purpose is to serve as central communication for all participating Citizens (excluding Hobby plan Citizens) to ask Kent and fellow participants questions and to post homework. As the instructor of the class, Kent will be monitoring this thread on a daily basis (especially Mon-Thurs) throughout the month of October to review homework and answer questions.
Free members are welcome to observe the thread but please respect that communication and participation is reserved for Citizens.
@theluthier. Hey thank you for the tutorial. So bump is to add like depth then? Guess I'll have to remake the toy. Somehow I cannot enable the node wrangler to see the effect. Also what is the dirent with black and white value and colored ones with the node wrangler?
@theluthier Question : i am following youre tutorial to see if i can somehow start to understand everything . but i have a problem .
i am at 8 minutes where you use the noise texture and use the node wrangler to see a preview .
How come that mine is so white compared to yours from in the tutorial ? its kinda strange that without anything diffrent that its not the same yet .

Its actually hard to see the noise at all trough in the tutorial you see a clear diffrence :( .
if someone else can help that is fine too :) got to get this finished :D
yyukinoh1989 Not sure if this will solve your issue but it appears you have plugged the Faculty port into the the viewer node whereas Kent plugged the Colour port in, maybe give that a shot.
Also out of curiosity are we going to get a report card or something similar? I imagine csehz is rather busy so naturally it's no worries if we don't but I thought it was worth an ask.

hey thank you for trying to help figure out the problem. indeed when you first follow the tutorial he does that and get all sort of soft collors but then replug it what should result in black and white with grey . but for me its more white then someting else xD
I did also tryed the colour port but also that is relative much white . compared to kents tutorial i should get collors then :(
yyukinoh1989 Think I may have figured it out. Under the "Preview" tab there's the "Surface" tab, open that up and look at the strength. If it's too high it'll glow like that.
Here it is at a strength of 0.5
And here it is with a strength of 50

thanks aaron . it does change it more to what kent has. trough its strange since with him he has a value of 1 so i do wonder what the problem could cause that its diffrent .

Thank you so much as well @theluthier for the help. i finally managed to get scratches :D
Trough i didnt understand the bump map and removed it i got a somehow better effect for the metal of the wheel and the plastic .
If i can ill add dust but i am not sure ill be able to do that in time . so for now ill post the result i got so far .

thecabbagedetective i think in 5 minutes the render should be finished then i can post it :) i guess instead of starting onto dust i do better go to sleep xD again i forgot time ^^ . i do know if i try the dust now ill stay awake for another 3-4 hours and i barly wont get any sleep then this night .
i got some rendering problem. when i render in 2.79 the moment the render finish i get a full white screen :( anyone know what this is causing ?
yyukinoh1989 Odd, I don't get that problem at all. Would you maybe like me to save the image and send it to you for now to save time?
sure so with you it renders ok ? really strange :s .
but thank you for doing this for me :) (could you increase samples again i think i set it to 20 or 50 to see if i keep getting the white screen ) but original it was higher (not sure how much it had to be again .
