SYLLABUS

Welcome to the CGCookie Class: Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender 2.8! If you're interested in computer graphics, 3D modeling, and you're new to Blender / new to Blender 2.8, this class is where you need to be.

This "Class" format invites all Citizen members to focus together on a particular topic/skill for a month. Participation looks like this:

  • RSVP and attend the Live Events
  • Watch the pre-recorded education outlined below
  • Ask questions
  • Submit homework by creating a unique forum thread to contain all your homework submissions for the month.
  • Generally be active in this thread

WHEN? The class will take place from August 6th - September 4th.

✅ WEEK 1: First Time with Blender 2.8 (August 6-12)

Abstract: The goal this week is to simply get familiar with the application. We’ve all been there: Opening Blender (or any 3D package), gazing at all the crazy UI, trying to orbit in the viewport, crying...Ok, maybe you were stronger than me and didn’t cry. But the reality is 3D software is daunting. There’s SO MUCH to digest especially when you’re a beginner.

This first week we’re going to overview Blender 2.8 and 3D from an absolutely beginner perspective. What is Blender for? What can it do? Wait, this isn’t a juicing seminar?

Goal of the Week: Get comfortable with Blender 2.8's UI, viewport navigation, creation and position objects.

Pre-recorded course to watch:

Week 1 Live Event (Remember to RSVP!)

Homework:

✅ WEEK 2: Pushing & Pulling Verts (August 13-19)

Abstract: Enter the world of mesh modeling: The oldest form of building 3D objects with your computer. We’ll discuss the technical art of “pushing and pulling verts” as modelers often call it. Welcome to this wild, geometric world!

Goal of the Week: Practicing editing a polygonal mesh's components to create a custom 3D model.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Week 2 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model a 3D object using mesh modeling techniques [post image(s) to this thread]

✅WEEK 3: Digital Clay (August 20-26)

Abstract: Digital sculpting is the more artistically intuitive method of 3D modeling. If pushing and pulling verts felt like the hard way of doing things, sculpting will be a welcomed alternative!

Goal of the Week: Practice digital sculpting.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Article to Read: Big Idea: Digital Tablets

Week 3 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Do the Melvin sculpting exercise [post a link to your submission in a reply to this thread]
  • Sculpt 3 primitives as demo'd in the live stream [post screenshots]
    • Cube from a sphere
    • Sphere from a cube
    • Cone from a sphere
  • EXTRA CREDIT: Pick on of these options:
    • Sculpt a human face [post a screenshot]
    • Sculpt *something* of your choice [post a screenshot]

✅WEEK 4: Next Steps as a Blender Modeler (August 27-September 2)

Abstract: At this point, you've been introduced to the key 3D modeling methods. Meaning that you have the tools you need to MODEL STUFF! This is where practice will make perfect. This is where you build stuff.

Goal of the Week: Be inspired to continue modeling and spend the week modeling or sculpting a challenging object.

Pre-recorded courses to watch: Modeling in Blender Learning Flow

Week 4 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model and/or sculpt something challenging this week! Try tackling a character, a vehicle, a houshold object, whatever. Show me what you've learned. Show me what you're capable of! [post image(s) to this thread]

✅Class Wrap-Up Stream (First Tuesday in September)

We'll be doing a 5th live stream to close out the class, review week 4 homework, and possibly a special guest.

This thread is reserved for CG Cookie Citizens that are participating in the "Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender 2.8" class. Its purpose is to serve as central communication for all participating Citizens (excluding Hobby plan Citizens) to ask Kent and fellow participants questions and to post homework. As the instructor of the class, Kent will be monitoring this thread on a daily basis (especially Mon-Thurs) throughout the month of Auguest to review homework and answer questions.

Free members are welcome to observe the thread but please respect that communication and participation is reserved for Citizens.

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

yyukinoh1989 You don't have to sign up for the classes.  You just have to be there (and be a citizen) to attend the class.  The same is true for the other live streams.  About your english:  You can start by capitalizing all your sentences.

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

    Thanx william.
I will keep that in mind .
As for the class if i cannot attend to it can i still see and question later, or isnt that possible ?

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

yyukinoh1989 Yes, you may watch previous streams by clicking on the "Past Events" button on the events page.  Then it will show the previous streams instead of the upcoming ones.

  • Jake Korosi(jakeblended) replied

I've been playing with 2.8 builds for a couple of days.  While we wait for the class, would this thread be appropriate for talking about things we learn about it, or about 2.8 in general, that may be more of interest to more experienced users of Blender?  Or would it be best not to clutter the thread with too many potentially advanced things that might confuse beginners, and better to start a different thread instead?

  • Morten Fjellheim(arev) replied

Are we allowed to use any tools for the week one homework, as long as they are used in object mode?

  • Kent Trammell replied

yyukinoh1989 Classes are available to all active citizen members. So if you signed up today for one month only, you'd only have access to the class for about half the month. If you only want to join for one month I recommend waiting till August 6th.

Also regarding RSVP's: They're our only current metric for preemptively measuring the size of a class. The size of the class helps us determine A) the health of a class subject and B) RSVP's also help me determine how many volunteer assistants I need. If we have 100 RSVP's I know I need to find 1-2 volunteers to help.

One day we'll have an official system in place that features registration which will make this metric more reliable.

And AMA does mean "ask me anything" which is an invitation to livestream viewers to take advantage of that time to ask questions for immediate answers.

  • Kent Trammell replied

jakeblended That's a good question. I'd like to talk about 2.8 questions/concerns in the livestreams but I could also imagine significant clutter happening here. How about you're welcome to make a list of questions/concerns in a single post in this thread - that way I/we can reference it concisely and I'll try to address them in a stream. I guess I'm trying to affirm you expressing your 2.8 questions without it turning into a confusing string of replies and such.

If only we had the official system in place, all of this could be organized and wide open for convo in the Q&A tab..

  • Kent Trammell replied

aarev Sure I don't see anything wrong with that..though, what tools are you thinking?

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

@theluthier For the RSVP should i somewhere post that i will join in or not ?
I also heard that the 2.8 will come up. some programs need to first be deleted then reinstalled .
How does this work with blender ? Do i first delete it and then install again or is it more like he update the older version ?

  • Morten Fjellheim(arev) replied

@theluthier I am thinking about using a latice, modifiers and a particle system.

  • Kent Trammell replied

yyukinoh1989 That's the purpose of RSVP's. if you RSVP to a live event it's telling me that you will be joining. If you don't RSVP it's telling me you won't be joining. Does that make sense?

aarev That's a little overkill I think lol. Week 1's assignment is really designed to just get practice creating objects and placing them by hand in the viewport. You can use snapping and SHIFT + R to repeat the last command easily/quickly, but lattices and particle systems are way beyond scope.

I can understand experienced users' temptation to go really complex while keeping within assignment context technically, but I don't think this is the right class for that. Rather I recommend you treat it like a simple assignment. Does that make sense?

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

    @theluthier
That i understand but do i RSVP just by telling here i join or where i should say i join in ?

  • Morten Fjellheim(arev) replied

@theluthier Ok, i will keep it simple.

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

@theluthier Kent I was just wondering, that in January finally how I found the information that there will be a Class on GG Cookie at all?

Well concretely found that fom Wes got on 1st of January a newsletter kind of mail and that changed my CG Cookie year and boosted my skills to not expected level :D

Basically mentioning this because frankly in the past very rarely (almost never) used to visit the Community thread on CG Cookie so the forum section, maybe it would be worth to send again something like that to the members to draw more attention

  • silentheart00 replied

yyukinoh1989 You RSVP by going to the event page and clicking the button that says "RSVP".  So, for the first week, click this link and it should look like this if you're able to attend:

  • Angel Roldan(jigsaw) replied

@theluthier are you implying there is going to be an updated/revamped message board? Personally, I do find this format a bit hard to follow and utilize (it's somewhat convoluted and not very intuitive).

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

    silentheart00
Thanks a lot it worked. i think i am signed up now :) Look forward the the class.
Right now i am following already some courses and trying to get more comfortable with blender .
starting my first exercise now with the cube cone and uv sphere to remodel a bit using diffrent setting

  • silentheart00 replied

yyukinoh1989 No problem!  Remember to do that for each of the weeks or any other events you want to attend, as well!  Looking forward to what you can make in the class!

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

    silentheart00
    I sure will :D
And i also am curious how i will do. Are you also participating ? (not sure if there is a list where to see the persons who will join in

  • silentheart00 replied

yyukinoh1989 Yeah, I'll be joining and plan to help out the class if Kent needs help.  Since he'll go over the new version of Blender, it'll be nice to have someone go over it before they get to redoing the intro courses.  It's going to be really fun and the community is very supportive.
