SYLLABUS

Welcome to the CGCookie Class: Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender 2.8! If you're interested in computer graphics, 3D modeling, and you're new to Blender / new to Blender 2.8, this class is where you need to be.

This "Class" format invites all Citizen members to focus together on a particular topic/skill for a month. Participation looks like this:

  • RSVP and attend the Live Events
  • Watch the pre-recorded education outlined below
  • Ask questions
  • Submit homework by creating a unique forum thread to contain all your homework submissions for the month.
  • Generally be active in this thread

WHEN? The class will take place from August 6th - September 4th.

✅ WEEK 1: First Time with Blender 2.8 (August 6-12)

Abstract: The goal this week is to simply get familiar with the application. We’ve all been there: Opening Blender (or any 3D package), gazing at all the crazy UI, trying to orbit in the viewport, crying...Ok, maybe you were stronger than me and didn’t cry. But the reality is 3D software is daunting. There’s SO MUCH to digest especially when you’re a beginner.

This first week we’re going to overview Blender 2.8 and 3D from an absolutely beginner perspective. What is Blender for? What can it do? Wait, this isn’t a juicing seminar?

Goal of the Week: Get comfortable with Blender 2.8's UI, viewport navigation, creation and position objects.

Pre-recorded course to watch:

Week 1 Live Event (Remember to RSVP!)

Homework:

✅ WEEK 2: Pushing & Pulling Verts (August 13-19)

Abstract: Enter the world of mesh modeling: The oldest form of building 3D objects with your computer. We’ll discuss the technical art of “pushing and pulling verts” as modelers often call it. Welcome to this wild, geometric world!

Goal of the Week: Practicing editing a polygonal mesh's components to create a custom 3D model.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Week 2 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model a 3D object using mesh modeling techniques [post image(s) to this thread]

✅WEEK 3: Digital Clay (August 20-26)

Abstract: Digital sculpting is the more artistically intuitive method of 3D modeling. If pushing and pulling verts felt like the hard way of doing things, sculpting will be a welcomed alternative!

Goal of the Week: Practice digital sculpting.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Article to Read: Big Idea: Digital Tablets

Week 3 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Do the Melvin sculpting exercise [post a link to your submission in a reply to this thread]
  • Sculpt 3 primitives as demo'd in the live stream [post screenshots]
    • Cube from a sphere
    • Sphere from a cube
    • Cone from a sphere
  • EXTRA CREDIT: Pick on of these options:
    • Sculpt a human face [post a screenshot]
    • Sculpt *something* of your choice [post a screenshot]

✅WEEK 4: Next Steps as a Blender Modeler (August 27-September 2)

Abstract: At this point, you've been introduced to the key 3D modeling methods. Meaning that you have the tools you need to MODEL STUFF! This is where practice will make perfect. This is where you build stuff.

Goal of the Week: Be inspired to continue modeling and spend the week modeling or sculpting a challenging object.

Pre-recorded courses to watch: Modeling in Blender Learning Flow

Week 4 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model and/or sculpt something challenging this week! Try tackling a character, a vehicle, a houshold object, whatever. Show me what you've learned. Show me what you're capable of! [post image(s) to this thread]

✅Class Wrap-Up Stream (First Tuesday in September)

We'll be doing a 5th live stream to close out the class, review week 4 homework, and possibly a special guest.

This thread is reserved for CG Cookie Citizens that are participating in the "Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender 2.8" class. Its purpose is to serve as central communication for all participating Citizens (excluding Hobby plan Citizens) to ask Kent and fellow participants questions and to post homework. As the instructor of the class, Kent will be monitoring this thread on a daily basis (especially Mon-Thurs) throughout the month of Auguest to review homework and answer questions.

Free members are welcome to observe the thread but please respect that communication and participation is reserved for Citizens.

    THUS ENDETH THE CLASS

What a month! For the first time we tried individual homework threads and the communication was off da chain. Some of you have gone from beginner to impressive intermediate in only 4 weeks! While the more experienced shared endlessly their knowledge and advice all month. We beat Blender 2.8 to a pulp and STUFF WAS MODELED, amiright?!

Consistency: Out of 38 total members that submitted homework, 17 submitted all 4 weeks. It's a significant commitment and I want to commend those members:

This Community: With each class, this community shines brighter and brighter. Maybe it's always been this way and the truth of which is simply being revealed more with each class. But I never see this so evident as in these classes workshops. The quality of question answering, advice, and encouragement is unparalleled if you ask me. Since you're awesome, we all learn better. Thank you!

Volunteer Instructor's Assistants: 3 galant members heeded the official call and proved themselves very valuable resources to this class and to me - while 2 others earned honorary VA status in my book. Thank you, VA's!

Highest Grade: Aaron Rudderham and Miranda van Elst take home the most cookies this month with 195 XP! Remember to check Zolt's Report Card to see how you did, if you like. Reminder that I calculated the total value for everyone based on this scale: F/- = 0, D = 10, C = 20, B = 30, A = 40, + = 5. I will manually be applying individual XP totals to your account in the next 24 hours.

NOTE: If you see that I missed a grade, please let me know - I want you to get all the XP you've earned.

Your Feedback is important! In an effort to improve the class experience and give you a chance to cast your votes for classes in 2019, please take a few minutes to fill out this questionnaire. I would greatly appreciate it 🙇🏻‍♂️

Thanks for joining BC1-1808! See you in October for the next one 😎

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

    @theluthier Another successful class done!

It was a good un' too, well done to everyone for sticking it through, whilst I haven't been here long it's amazing to see how far along we've all come. To see people who'd barely touched Blender prior to the class being able to confidently model and sculpt their own projects by the end is one helluva turnaround.

Questionnaire filled out, too. Really looking forward to the future of the classes - I mean workshops - and CG Cookie in general. It was a pleasure modeling alongside you all, and I look forward to where your interests in CG take you. With that being said, I'll (hopefully) catch you all again come October and I hope you all have a good one. Peace.

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

@theluthier If I were there, I would have answered 2.

  • Kent Trammell replied

williamatics You mean you prefer "classes" to "workshops"?

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

@theluthier hey thanx for the answers.  just followed the retopo of pierro it seems to be fun . just hope i get it right seems really important. gonna watch the pilot one tomorrow since its bed time. after i fainted the dokter strictly adviced to put lesser stress on the Brain.  not a burn out seems i just had too much Brain activiteit what cause muscle pain around the Brain.and the stress at work was getting too high sadly that caused the faint. For my eevee i noticed youre eyes are round. now since eevee is a Pokémon should i make them round too or not ? at this moment i sales the sphere to be pretty flat.

i also would love to see the animale fur tutorial so ill look forward to it.

also gonna keep an eye to see when i can watch the end of the class live session.

it was really fun . i am sure we all felt this way. now its up to us to even improve further

again thank you so much as well as all members for helping out :D

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied
On Blender 2.8.. I think the idea is that if you're on another tool group, using the hotkey for the group would pull the active, while a second press would cycle through, though as we noted, it doesn't loop on that cycle (which,  don't mind the cycle as long as they looped it). So, for example, if you're using the clay group and have clay strips as your active for that group and want to switch to the inflate group (with inflate as the "active" of the group), pressing i would switch to that group with inflate as the active. Then pressing c would make the clay group with the strips as the active.  I think that's the intent.  As we've seen, it's not always consistent on this behavior, but since it's still in Alpha and they're focused on showstoppers (ie things that crash), I'm going to be patient and wait.

Either way, it is even easier to click on the one you want than it used to be and I like the sculpting workspace they have now.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

I wholeheartedly agree with everything thecabbagedetective said, it's been a pleasure doing this workshop with you guys! Very inspiring seeing what everyone made, learned a lot from all your feedback and all the encouragement everyone gives is so motivating. It's been a blast!! 😁

Also filled out the questionnaire of course 😊 -> @theluthier I noticed I didn't get that whole list with the many many awesome options for future workshops to choose from, the one you showed in the livestream, or did I misunderstood that this list would be in the questionare?

Now, if you all would excuse me, I got one Ratchet and Clank over here waiting for me to spend some time with them 😎

Have a great day everyone, see you all in October for the next one! 😃

  • Pavel Mazanik(nekronavt) replied

Have to thank you all for this month. It was first time I participate in event like this and it's fun, motivating and inspiring. It's so cool when you are learning along with a group of people, you see their work, they see yours, both giving advices etc. I subscribed to CGCookie for prerecorded courses, but here is where gold was buried! And it's very cool to have a communication with english speaking community by the way.

    PS: @theluthier wut? :D

PPS: 2765 posts on this thread + all homework threads if I counted right. And it's 216,86% of previous class thread.

  • Ken Claassen(cptken) replied

nekronavt I must agree. I actually didn't know there were live classes when I signed up to CGCookie. The moment I found out about them I RSVP'd to every scheduled one. I think it's great and while self learning is good it's also sometimes good to have the motivation that only a class with homework can provide.

The community here is great and so rare for me to see such a positive community on the internet of all places.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

nekronavt I didn't know it either when I joined CG Cookie, also came for prerecorded content. Maybe @theluthier should think of a way to promote / highlight it more then, since it is so awesome to join a class / workshop, and since watching live streams is so much fun 😬😃

B.t.w. that's a lot of posts!! well done on communication, feedback, encouregement and fun conversations guys!! 😄

  • Kent Trammell replied

yyukinoh1989 Oh no, you fainted recently from too much brain activity? Wow, yeah take it easier please. Really hope the class didn't push you there 😳

If you keep watching the Piero course, I model the eye in 2 parts: an outter sphere and an inner sphere with a concave iris (like your Eevee). That more closely resembles actual [human] eyes and usually turns out best in a render.

  • Kent Trammell replied

AHH MAN - I linked to the wrong questionnaire ssmurfmier1985! Here's the CORRECT QUESTIONNAIRE. I've since updated the link to the original post's link and the link at the top of this thread's description.

I'm sorry to ask again, but I'm quite keen on your answers. Would you mind filling out the correct one again 🙏 (As far as I can tell, these peeps have filled out the wrong one - again, very sorry)

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

@theluthier No, I think the name "Workshop" is more awesome.  What I mean is that I'm primarily doing this as a hobby.  I don't ever plan to work in the industry because I entered 3d so that I could express myself, not so that I could express my director/client.

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

I filled out the correct survey.

  • Kent Trammell replied

I subscribed to CGCookie for prerecorded courses, but here is where gold was buried!

LOVE to hear this! While I'm going to be shifting more of my effort toward pre-recorded courses in 2019, this class workshop is still where my heart is. Thanks for joining in this month.

PPS: 2765 posts on this thread + all homework threads if I counted right. And it's 216,86% of previous class thread.

That's nuts! I'd been wondering what that math was but hadn't calculated it. We be talking 😎

PS: Thanks for the error find. I fixed Zsolt's username mention. I'm a scrub.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

@theluthier Did it for you 😊

Wanted to express a wish, forget to say it in the questionnaire. As a hardsurface modeling option you give the 'vehicle modeling', which is pretty cool and I would totally join that workshop. But, what I would loooovvveeee even more is 'sci-fi / robot modeling' .... 😀😉

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

@theluthier hey thanks gonna watch the pierro eyes . hope i can implent them to eevee. and it more happend because of my currency work . they arent really friendly or helpfull and because of the stress with the discussion after 25 minutes i fainted.  nut the dokter said to take things easy now so i can recover

  • Kent Trammell replied

cptken Thanks for the [positive] feedback 👊

The community here is great and so rare for me to see such a positive community on the internet of all places.

Isn't that the TRUTH! Well said.

  • Kent Trammell replied

williamatics Oh ok, cool. Sorry I've asked so many "press 1 or 2" questions I got confused. I'm glad to know you're learning Blender as a hobby interest 👍

Also thanks for filling out the correct survey 🙇🏻‍♂️

  • Kent Trammell replied

ssmurfmier1985 You're right. Lampel and I have been talking recently about how "hidden" classes workshops and livestreams are. It should be relatively simple for our webdev to expose them much better in the near future. At the beginning of 2018 I kinda liked that it was less known - like when a big band does an intimate bar show - but at this point it's silly that so few know about them.

PS: I could possibly do a more generic "hard surface" class where sci-fi robots are welcome. In the meantime, have you watched this course?
