SYLLABUS

Welcome to the CGCookie Class: Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender 2.8! If you're interested in computer graphics, 3D modeling, and you're new to Blender / new to Blender 2.8, this class is where you need to be.

This "Class" format invites all Citizen members to focus together on a particular topic/skill for a month. Participation looks like this:

  • RSVP and attend the Live Events
  • Watch the pre-recorded education outlined below
  • Ask questions
  • Submit homework by creating a unique forum thread to contain all your homework submissions for the month.
  • Generally be active in this thread

WHEN? The class will take place from August 6th - September 4th.

✅ WEEK 1: First Time with Blender 2.8 (August 6-12)

Abstract: The goal this week is to simply get familiar with the application. We’ve all been there: Opening Blender (or any 3D package), gazing at all the crazy UI, trying to orbit in the viewport, crying...Ok, maybe you were stronger than me and didn’t cry. But the reality is 3D software is daunting. There’s SO MUCH to digest especially when you’re a beginner.

This first week we’re going to overview Blender 2.8 and 3D from an absolutely beginner perspective. What is Blender for? What can it do? Wait, this isn’t a juicing seminar?

Goal of the Week: Get comfortable with Blender 2.8's UI, viewport navigation, creation and position objects.

Pre-recorded course to watch:

Week 1 Live Event (Remember to RSVP!)

Homework:

✅ WEEK 2: Pushing & Pulling Verts (August 13-19)

Abstract: Enter the world of mesh modeling: The oldest form of building 3D objects with your computer. We’ll discuss the technical art of “pushing and pulling verts” as modelers often call it. Welcome to this wild, geometric world!

Goal of the Week: Practicing editing a polygonal mesh's components to create a custom 3D model.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Week 2 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model a 3D object using mesh modeling techniques [post image(s) to this thread]

✅WEEK 3: Digital Clay (August 20-26)

Abstract: Digital sculpting is the more artistically intuitive method of 3D modeling. If pushing and pulling verts felt like the hard way of doing things, sculpting will be a welcomed alternative!

Goal of the Week: Practice digital sculpting.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Article to Read: Big Idea: Digital Tablets

Week 3 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Do the Melvin sculpting exercise [post a link to your submission in a reply to this thread]
  • Sculpt 3 primitives as demo'd in the live stream [post screenshots]
    • Cube from a sphere
    • Sphere from a cube
    • Cone from a sphere
  • EXTRA CREDIT: Pick on of these options:
    • Sculpt a human face [post a screenshot]
    • Sculpt *something* of your choice [post a screenshot]

✅WEEK 4: Next Steps as a Blender Modeler (August 27-September 2)

Abstract: At this point, you've been introduced to the key 3D modeling methods. Meaning that you have the tools you need to MODEL STUFF! This is where practice will make perfect. This is where you build stuff.

Goal of the Week: Be inspired to continue modeling and spend the week modeling or sculpting a challenging object.

Pre-recorded courses to watch: Modeling in Blender Learning Flow

Week 4 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model and/or sculpt something challenging this week! Try tackling a character, a vehicle, a houshold object, whatever. Show me what you've learned. Show me what you're capable of! [post image(s) to this thread]

✅Class Wrap-Up Stream (First Tuesday in September)

We'll be doing a 5th live stream to close out the class, review week 4 homework, and possibly a special guest.

This thread is reserved for CG Cookie Citizens that are participating in the "Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender 2.8" class. Its purpose is to serve as central communication for all participating Citizens (excluding Hobby plan Citizens) to ask Kent and fellow participants questions and to post homework. As the instructor of the class, Kent will be monitoring this thread on a daily basis (especially Mon-Thurs) throughout the month of Auguest to review homework and answer questions.

Free members are welcome to observe the thread but please respect that communication and participation is reserved for Citizens.

silentheart00 Thank you. I sure will do my best.  Trough i think ill lose a full day. Still isnt uploaded and have to go to work in 1 hour 30. so if i am able to watch it this night when i get home i can start tommorow

  • Kent Trammell replied

nekronavt Sculpting a face + texturing + particle hair...that's a ton of work for a week. Personally I'd rather see that time spent refining the face sculpt by itself. Tossing a marble shader after is fine with me.

But maybe you're more experienced with faces. How about you post your sculpt when you're ready for texturing and we'll take a look at it before you begin texturing?

  • Pavel Mazanik(nekronavt) replied

@theluthier I sculpted a few faces before, but can't call myself experienced. Ok, I'll try to do my best with sculpt this time. I can try texturing and hair later.

  • silentheart00 replied

nekronavt Yeah, you can always keep soldiering on after the class has ended.  No one says you have to stop working on class things once the class ends =]

  • silentheart00 replied

yyukinoh1989 No prob.  Do the best you can!

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

@theluthier Hey i figured out how you probably switched between the brushes during the livestream.
when you wanted grab and press G you start with the thumb , But when you press it again it will switch to the grab tool .
this happens for all of them at least for me .

  • Pavel Mazanik(nekronavt) replied

yyukinoh1989 Doesn't work  for me. It iterates from first to last brush in the group and stops. I expect it to be a loop. Todays build.

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

nekronavt strange. if i keep pressing g it keeps switching between them. i do use the first blender 2.8 release maybe that one is stabler?

  • silentheart00 replied

    yyukinoh1989 Huh, interesting.

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

silentheart00 indeed i am happy i kept the first 2.8 blender ,seems best one so far. or at least i have not that many issues.  just sometimes a crash and mirror mode have a problem too . but then again maybe its easier for me since i almost didnt use 2.79 . i looked into it but somehow i find 2.8 better for me.

  • Ken Claassen(cptken) replied

yyukinoh1989 2.8 Is definitely designed better. The only issue right now is it's stability and you never know what will work and what won't. I'm really looking forward to a stable 2.8 build that I can completely transfer over to. Hopefully the beta will be stable for the most part with only the most obscure and inconsequential bugs remaining.

  • Tishard Nathaniel(sickelo) replied

i should really read these class threads more often because its basically a cheat sheet if you just compile all the core information

  • silentheart00 replied

yyukinoh1989 I find it interesting that people are having issues with 2.8 Alpha 2.  Maybe I'm not stress testing it enough when I use it?  I do download the daily builds and keep the last 3, test the new one to make sure it works before I delete the previous builds, and I haven't had much issue with them.  Curious.

  • Jake Korosi(jakeblended) replied

I haven't been having any showstopping issues with 2.8 yet in my sculpting.  Yeah the hotkey inconsistency is an annoyance for now; so I've taken to switching brushes by using the spacebar to bring up the tool menu right at my cursor, it seems almost just as fast as the hotkeys.

  • Kent Trammell replied

jakeblended Ooo I like that spacebar approach. Good call

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

Being not sure how that happened, but in 2.79 somehow the size of the font decreased in the left T panel (that yellow marked area on the printscreen), while in the other windows the fonts seem with the original size.

Does maybe someone know which shortcut results that? Finally I like it I think, because then that section can be more narrow and leaves more space for the modelling

  • Jake Korosi(jakeblended) replied

csehz Ctrl + Middle Mouse button scales the panels and properties editors.  You may have done it accidentally.

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

jakeblended Jake thanks for the prompt answer, yes confirming it was not intended, although so learnt something new :-)

  • smurfmier1985 replied

jakeblended csehz I believe hovering your mouse over it and prssing the + or button on your numpad does it too

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

yyukinoh1989 @theluthier I noticed this watching the replay, so I went back and checked... I have been following 2.8 since before the code quest.  A version from last month didn't have this problem. When I changed a brush set to have a particular one active, when I used the hot key for that group, it would use the one that I had selected.  But all the versions that I had downloaded from this month (including the alpha 2) had that behavior Kent experienced in the live demo where it kept switching to another in the list, so something changed between the latter part of last month (July) and the start of this month (August).

Since this was a sculpting week... One thing I really do like about the 2.8 version is the persistent icon in the upper left that shows which tool you're using (as well as being able to see the list of brush sets).  It was something that I had a layout specific for sculpting that was  a work around in 2.79 to have something that showed which brush I had active, and now I don't have to.
