SYLLABUS

Welcome to the CGCookie Class: Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender 2.8! If you're interested in computer graphics, 3D modeling, and you're new to Blender / new to Blender 2.8, this class is where you need to be.

This "Class" format invites all Citizen members to focus together on a particular topic/skill for a month. Participation looks like this:

  • RSVP and attend the Live Events
  • Watch the pre-recorded education outlined below
  • Ask questions
  • Submit homework by creating a unique forum thread to contain all your homework submissions for the month.
  • Generally be active in this thread

WHEN? The class will take place from August 6th - September 4th.

✅ WEEK 1: First Time with Blender 2.8 (August 6-12)

Abstract: The goal this week is to simply get familiar with the application. We’ve all been there: Opening Blender (or any 3D package), gazing at all the crazy UI, trying to orbit in the viewport, crying...Ok, maybe you were stronger than me and didn’t cry. But the reality is 3D software is daunting. There’s SO MUCH to digest especially when you’re a beginner.

This first week we’re going to overview Blender 2.8 and 3D from an absolutely beginner perspective. What is Blender for? What can it do? Wait, this isn’t a juicing seminar?

Goal of the Week: Get comfortable with Blender 2.8's UI, viewport navigation, creation and position objects.

Pre-recorded course to watch:

Week 1 Live Event (Remember to RSVP!)

Homework:

✅ WEEK 2: Pushing & Pulling Verts (August 13-19)

Abstract: Enter the world of mesh modeling: The oldest form of building 3D objects with your computer. We’ll discuss the technical art of “pushing and pulling verts” as modelers often call it. Welcome to this wild, geometric world!

Goal of the Week: Practicing editing a polygonal mesh's components to create a custom 3D model.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Week 2 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model a 3D object using mesh modeling techniques [post image(s) to this thread]

✅WEEK 3: Digital Clay (August 20-26)

Abstract: Digital sculpting is the more artistically intuitive method of 3D modeling. If pushing and pulling verts felt like the hard way of doing things, sculpting will be a welcomed alternative!

Goal of the Week: Practice digital sculpting.

Pre-recorded courses to watch:

Article to Read: Big Idea: Digital Tablets

Week 3 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Do the Melvin sculpting exercise [post a link to your submission in a reply to this thread]
  • Sculpt 3 primitives as demo'd in the live stream [post screenshots]
    • Cube from a sphere
    • Sphere from a cube
    • Cone from a sphere
  • EXTRA CREDIT: Pick on of these options:
    • Sculpt a human face [post a screenshot]
    • Sculpt *something* of your choice [post a screenshot]

✅WEEK 4: Next Steps as a Blender Modeler (August 27-September 2)

Abstract: At this point, you've been introduced to the key 3D modeling methods. Meaning that you have the tools you need to MODEL STUFF! This is where practice will make perfect. This is where you build stuff.

Goal of the Week: Be inspired to continue modeling and spend the week modeling or sculpting a challenging object.

Pre-recorded courses to watch: Modeling in Blender Learning Flow

Week 4 Live Event (Don't forget to RSVP)

Homework:

  • Model and/or sculpt something challenging this week! Try tackling a character, a vehicle, a houshold object, whatever. Show me what you've learned. Show me what you're capable of! [post image(s) to this thread]

✅Class Wrap-Up Stream (First Tuesday in September)

We'll be doing a 5th live stream to close out the class, review week 4 homework, and possibly a special guest.

This thread is reserved for CG Cookie Citizens that are participating in the "Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender 2.8" class. Its purpose is to serve as central communication for all participating Citizens (excluding Hobby plan Citizens) to ask Kent and fellow participants questions and to post homework. As the instructor of the class, Kent will be monitoring this thread on a daily basis (especially Mon-Thurs) throughout the month of Auguest to review homework and answer questions.

Free members are welcome to observe the thread but please respect that communication and participation is reserved for Citizens.

@theluthier not yet, but it's verrrryyyy high on my watch list!!! 😃 First gonna do intro to retopo, mesh modeling bootcamp and intro to hard surface modeling, got to learn the basics first right? 😉

I was thinking Star Wars x-wing with R2D2, which is sorta vehicle,  and sci-fi, and robot. All in one 😬 But a more generic hard surface workshop would be pretty nice, then everyone can choose for them self what they want to make. Might even speak to more people than a workshop with a specific topic like 'vehicle', something for everyone 😊

  • silentheart00 replied

@theluthier Letting you know I filled out the correct questionnaire.  Whoops!

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

@theluthier Kent I just also filled the questionnaire, hopefully it went through.

Thanks a lot for the live streams they are just better than ever, plus in this BC1-1808 class I think the individual class threads worked just brilliantly. They gave somehow some extra motivation, that twice thought before posting whether my model is good enough as the schoolfellows will visit my thread and so it needs to be good :-)

yyukinoh1989 just reading that you fainted??, your commitment is really awesome, but just remember the most important is the health, everything comes after. Wishing all the best and let's meet in October!

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

csehz hey thanks . i sure will. but it was mostly because of all stress from work . i had a discussion but it went out of hand . and i felt really irritated. mostly since no matter what i say at work nothing change. they all stay unfriendly what is not fun to work like that. after several minutes it appeared i fainted . too high hearts rate blood pressure and the muscle at the Brain section where too (not sure if its the right word : tense) along with too much activitie on my Brain.  that is wat the doctor recomended to take things easy for some time. still not that i mat not work on projects but i needed better sleep and at least 1 hour or relax without looking at anything or thinking too much about my work. hardest problem is that i take work with me home and i should try to avoid that mostly .

During the week 2 stream, when somebody asked about modifiers, I would have shouted HOUDINI!  In Houdini ALL mesh operations are procedural and node based.

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

Rohan Dalvi (The Andrew Price of Houdini) made a video that explains procedural modeling.

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

yyukinoh1989 No worries once you will work with Blender professionally and with enjoying it.

I know you also used to the recorded version of the live stream like me, it seems being already up by now so we can start :-)

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

csehz hey thanx . indeed i hope the day ill work Professional with blender be here as soon as i can. really love blender and been here much more then my current work.

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

ssmurfmier1985  question since youre NL too could you help explain a few things to me in NL ? have some trouble understanding a few things . or if someone else could explain it in NL to me that is fine too (i know someone else speak it too but i cant remember who xD)
1:What's one word to summarize your opinion of CGC Classes? (not really sure what this means )

2:How was the workload / homework expectations this month? (do they mean what we finded of the homework task or do they mean what we find of what the teacher expected of us ? )

  • smurfmier1985 replied

    Hope this helps  😊

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Hey thanks Miranda this sure helps. gonna fill it in after work when i get home :) look forward to the next classes :D gonna need to do a lot of studying .

  • Kent Trammell replied

Thanks to everyone that filled out the Questionnaire so far!

Today I'm officially unpinning this thread. Sniffles..it's been a great ride.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

@theluthier Bye thread, I'm gonna miss you.. 😢

Viking sendoff, anyone?  This thread is 🔥

  • Kent Trammell replied
One last thing! I added links to all of Kate's homework reels to the very top of this thread's description.
  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

@theluthier awesome. its fun to look back like that . all submission from each week. i also filled in the questionairy. there where several fun topics for next year.  can i still ask questions here?

since i wonder how does 3D printing Works? i supose its not like a regular printer with papers.

then i am kinda curious too and wondering youre working for cgcookie right? is that some kind of volunteers work or is it actually a work where you get paid ? also if you dont mind how long are you working at cgcookie?

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

Hope you don't mind... though I didn't really "take" this particular one (though I did the first one and intended to do the second) I filled out the questionnaire, because I'd be interested in several.. though I think all would be great topics :D

As for calling them workshops instead of classes... I'm someone who attended the very first workshop that Jonathan Williamson did on Mastering Modeling in Blender (has that been over 4 years ago already?)  and these classes feel almost exactly like that workshop, so I'd have absolutely no problems with the name change. I think either name, classes or workshop, conveys that interactive element to what you're doing, and while I'll be sad that there are fewer of them, I think I like the idea of having more time between them so 1) you can make them better and 2) we could have a chance to try a project or two on our own using the new skills we just learned.

Whatever you decide to call them, I like this format!

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

And I'm looking forward to the lighting and shading Class/Workshop!

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

QUESTION:  If the Dynamics Workshop actually happens, is it okay if I use Houdini?

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

    @theluthier Hey
i wonder i am trying to do the eevee eyes but got stuck with the tutorial .
for the critique i would want to do the retopo since its important. but now i wonder is it smart to start the retopo  while i still have to do the eyes correctly and resculp the eye area ? or is it ok to start and then resculp the face and adjust the retopo ?
