Hey everyone!
When CG Cookie first started we loved to host Pumpkin and Snowman contests. It was cool to see what everyone created with these given constraints. Of course using Blender was a pretty rad thing as well.
My favorite was the nod to the movie Aliens done in a pumpkin render. If somebody could find this, it would be cool to see again!
I missed them so much, this year we've decided to revisit the past, with the launch of our brand new Epic Pumpkin Contest!
While nearly all the information and activity takes place on the Contest itself, I thought it would be beneficial to have an area for questions and general OMG this is amazing type comments. Plus we're a tad rusty on hosting contests. 🧐
In all seriousness, this is one of favorites and excited to see what you come up with this year. We've got a ton of awesome awards lined up for you and even some random chances to win by simply sharing your work on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #MyCookiePumpkin
Best of luck and thanks for being a part of the Cookie!

question is it a must to have it scary or is it also allowed to make a pumpkin cute or weird etc ?
yyukinoh1989 Taken from the competition description:
"And while scary is our key theme, the interpretation is up to you: funny-creepy (like clowns, or the Kardashians), pop-culture inspired spooky (most music videos by Grimes), or straight up terrifying (again, the Kardashians)."
So I'd say cute or weird is fine providing it still has spooky undertones, like for example a focus on a small, happy, cutesy Jack o' Lantern with a bunch of large, scary Jack o' Lanterns staring at it in contempt. something like that.
Also my bad for not getting around to having a look at your WIP, I'll get on that now.
thecabbagedetective ok :) well the original concept would been perfect for creepy scary but that would not yet be possible for me . that is why i wonder if there is only like one scary pumpkin it would be enough . i also didnt get this part (kardashians) and pop culture inspired spooky . i not sure know what that is or means .
yyukinoh1989 To my understanding it was mostly a joke - the Kardashians part at least - but by pop culture inspired spooky I'd imagine they mean scenes inspired by myths and spooky stories.
ccalvas By all means! That's what I'm doing and it seems a couple others too. Go for it!
The competition is stiff. Everyone's stuff looks so awesome! I just hope I can do half as good as everyone else.
I appreciate the help I've been given, just having other people give advice helped me learn so much. I still have a long road ahead of me, glad I've got CG Cookie staff and members there to cheer me on and give help and support. I'm gonna get the subscription one way or another, if it's the last thing I do! Yeahhh... I'm going to get it before the start of next year.
Good luck to you all! Do your best and go one step further.
Sweet competition! Gonna try to make it work, eventhough I'm kinda late to the party-
I have just some general questions about the programs we can use tho!
1. Is it allowed to use things like Photoshop or Substace Painter fo the textures? (I know you answered a similar question earlier, but i just wanna be sure about the specific software)
2. And retopology counts to modeling(?) So no other retopotools outside of blender are permitted, correct?
Question. Aside from the individual forum threads. Is there a place we can see all finished works?
@wesburke Seeing as there's the possibility of someone's .blend file coming into question is that gonna be a problem for me? Because I'm about 1/3rd done with my project and with my underpowered PC it's almost unusable due to being so slow, so I'm gonna have to utilise multiple .blend files and put them together. Would this cause any issues with that?
thecabbagedetective @wesburke I'm hoping we can turn it in via a Dropbox link, I got at least two files for my project so far..
thepingdelf Great, look forward to your entry!
Yes, you may use Photoshop or Substance for texture creation. Same thing for modeling as long as it is within Blender. e.g. Retopoflow is OK, though pushing retopo through 3DSMAX would not be. Hope that helps!
ggardjeto7 Great question. Yes it could be cartoonish. I've seen some darn cute cartoons that would scary some folks. ;) But yes, have fun and excited to see what you come up with!
How do I update my entry? I tried deleting the image but it said "something went wrong"
