This is what's happening so far

Need to adjust the color (colour) of the sky to match the artwork and gonna need more clouds for a 360d scene.

  • adrian replied

Going to play with geometry nodes to see what I can come up with for alternative clouds.

Also I want to mess with volumetric clouds a bit more and see if I can create more than one cloud with only one volume cube.

  • Parker Bourassa(pfbourassa) replied

    Great start!
Looks like we could use even less detail (tubulence) to match the reference.

  • adrian replied

Yes this was a quick render of the different cloud types / shapes.

Great work already, @adrian2301  👍! Such a peaceful looking sky 😊.

  • adrian replied

Done some colour adjustment for the sky and reshaped the clouds and repositioned them.

  • adrian replied

Added a second light to brighten the clouds

nice work already it looks nicely done so far :)

Great progress here @adrian2301. The biggest difference from the art for me is the sharp stylistic points:

If you could figure out how to achieve those it'd be dynamite. The thing I've always wanted for volumes was using a shaped mesh as a domain rather than the cube calculation we had when I recorded the cloud course. Maybe look into how those work for fine-tuned cloud shaping?

  • adrian replied

I've had a look at Ghibli trees , there is also Ghibli clouds, but not sure about the way they look. I'm going to try and mix the two and see what I can come up with.

I was already thinking of using metaballs. Worthy of a try.

Using the usual volume cube it tends to break apart on the thinner sections. I’ve seen it done now with meshes so I will definitely look into this method.

  • adrian replied

So had a play around with mesh volume clouds

    And here it is....

Made a base shape from metaballs and then converted to mesh, a quick sculpt to better define the shape. Add a volume empty and added the only 2 modifiers available, first a Mesh to Volume Mod, select the base mesh as the object, I've used a density of 3 , and Ext Band Width of 0.05 which keeps it more to the base shape. The next mod is the Volume Displace, add a texture the same as with a standard Displace Mod, I used a cloud tex with default settings, the rest of the settings in the Volume Displace Mod are set at the default..

This is Ext Band Width set to 1 👇, as apposed to 0.05 👆

This with the Volume Displace strength down from default 1 👆👆, to 0.1👇

So you can see the effect of these settings.

wow nice shape , this really is getting a nice cloud :D wonder how it looks with collors

  • adrian replied

    Thank you yyukinoh1989

I've made 3 clouds now , and I playing with lighting and shading at the moment, should post more renders later.

  • spikeyxxx replied

@adrian2301  did you consider using the Mesh To Volume for the clouds?

  • ladymito replied

That looks like a cloud in the shape of a whale 😁

  • adrian replied

Yes spikeyxxx but with the mod added to a mesh it fits the mesh shape but adding a volume empty and then add the mods to the empty I can move around and get a different effect plus the volume displacement works nicely also.

  • adrian replied

Added the Sky and atmosphere, added some color to the clouds.

    Without Color

    Then color added

And the reminder of the artwork.

  • adrian replied

    And a bit more adjustment

  • adrian replied

The simple node set up for the color

nice work already , love the rim light on the bigger parts . youre getting closer to the reference. most important part now is i think a bit work on the collor place's. still its looking awesome already :D and we still have 3 weeks to go.

perhaps some smaller clouds in the back would be nice too (i am so bad with words xD) but the stripe sort clouds you see in the background might add also a extra someting :)
