Beautiful Bite-Sized 3D Typography Projects

Welcome to TYPE. The third course in the SESSIONS series where we focus on the theme of creating more with less. TYPE is a deep dive into typography design and animation.

A picture is worth 1000 words, a video is worth 1M pictures, so a video of animated words is worth...too much to calculate! Yeah, that math checks out.

Seriously though, the art of animating text is extremely useful. Each of the projects in the course is designed to be created within 2 hours or less, as is required by the SESSIONS format. The point is to create something new every day in a short time span. The faster we exercise our skills the more they'll turn into superhero muscles.

Get Caught Up

Are you brand new to Blender?

These courses should help you get up to speed in no time.

What you will learn

This course is packed with peer-reviewed insight about every corner of Blender. Here's a few specifics:

  • Geometry Nodes (GN) for regular people
  • GN concepts like proximity influence, instancing, procedural animation, remeshing and booleans
  • Procedural material creation
  • Practical lighting insights
  • Typeface and title design essentials
  • Compositing to maximize final aesthetics
  • Rendering tips and tricks

While you can follow the steps with the provided course files, we highly encourage you to apply what you learn in unique ways rather than simply copying what is demonstrated. Embrace creativity!

Chapter 1

Blurred Lines

Kick off the course with a simple project that artistically obscures rotating text behind an array of glass cylinders. It's the first example of easy concepts that radically affect the final result.

Chapter 2

Glass Tiles

This project is a spiritual successor to the first, demonstrating how relatively small tweaks to a creative concept can result in very different aesthetics. This time Kaizen eases into Geometry Nodes to generate a glass tile grid.

Chapter 3

Molten Reveal

We've tasted the power of Geometry Nodes but now it's time for a complete meal! This cinematic title reveal transitions from molten lava to cooled metal. The perfect style for that movie you're working on 👀

Chapter 4

Fill Switch

Another project based in Geometry Nodes. The animation utilizes proximity to control the shape and movement of instances arranged in a typeface-specific string. The final result dynamic and emphasized.

Chapter 5

KeyCaps

The final and most abstract project. Learn to manipulate a grid of instanced keycaps while also applying a unique letter/character to each instance. You'll also see how to instance a certain word across the keys. Plus you can leverage the shader to transition from wireframe to realistic material.
