Modeling the Globe

Creating the Base and Dome

In this lesson, we kick off our project by modeling the core components of a snow globe—starting with the base and the glass dome. We go step by step through creating the plate, refining its shape, and adding key details such as beveled edges and star decorations. Finally, we construct the glass dome using an optimized method to ensure smooth shading and a realistic appearance.

Key Takeaways:

  • Creating the Base: Start with a circle, reduce vertices, and use extrusion, bevel, and subdivision modifiers for a smooth, polished look.

  • Adding Decorative Elements: Model a star using a circle, duplicate it around the base, and apply a bevel modifier for a detailed finish.

  • Building the Glass Dome: Instead of using a UV sphere, use a subdivided cube to avoid shading artifacts, then apply a solidify modifier for thickness.

In the next lesson, we’ll move on to blocking out the interior of the snow globe, adding walls, a floor, and a roof. Stay tuned!
