So I was able to extrude out the base and subdivide the bottom, but I am having trouble on how to properly select the base of the sphere like object so I can extrude it out as in the example.

To make the cut off corners on the first one, is there a more efficient way ? I used the knife tool and cut a triangle and then disolved the faces individually.
