Light Match

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

I had a lot of trouble with this one. I don't think my material was quite right, so the highlights never quite looked right. and I couldn't quite find the right color/saturation/light strength combination that more closely matched.

All that said, I think this is much better than the original render I did to show off this sculpt that I did. It's from a personal challenge I gave myself to spend 15-30 minutes each day for 30 days to get back into the habit of working in Blender while practicing sculpting and working on learning to focus on larger forms first before jumping into detail. The shell detail came outside of the 30 minutes, and I fixed the feet so they all touched the floor. It's also one of hte first things I ever had 3D printed, so this model is among my favs, even as "bad" as it is.

(and thanks to yyukinoh1989 for finding the great image to match to.. Was one of the only ones I found with an object that felt it was of "similar" size and theme.)

gradyp I'm scratching a hole in my head trying to figure out how I've missed grading ALL your assignments so far...sorry about that! I'll catch up with your thread today.

  • Kent Trammell replied

Again, sorry for being so late. Here comes 3 weeks of feedback :)

    Week 1

Kudos for exploring Eevee with the toy truck exercise in week 1. I feel that Cycles has a slight edge in realism over you Eevee one but not by much. Truck definitely feels plasticky in both.

I don't have any significant criticism of your day time bedroom scene. Looks believable to me and appropriately colored (or desaturated) according to the seemingly overcast environment in the window. Your bedside lamp in the night scene is a little too strong imo. It's illuminating the brightly all by itself. I do like the warmth in contrast with the bluish moonlight.

Adding in the additional effort of the light match, you've earned an A+ in my book for week 1.

    Week 2

Your light match is very close to the source. The only thing that's missing imo is the subtle red fill light coming from the right. It's most apparent on the edge of the axe blade and under the skirt around the character's left knee. It's quite subtle but noticeable the more I look at it. Interesting choice to go with red there...I wouldn't have thought of that. It's a B on that one for me.

Your beetle made my favorites as I remember. I like the variety of reflections especially. It really helps to establish the objects into the believability/tangibility zone. A

    Week 3

3 characters this week? Way to take the easy way out Grady... 😅 Yeah right, you did a ton of work. I like your Sintel version. The pink and teal work well together, both in lighting and material colors. Vincent looks good aside from the yellowy-green bg/floor color. They don't jive as well as they could. I swapped in a purply pink which works a little better imo:

Victor has a similar issue, but I didn't swap out the color for a new background. I love the 3 rendered together! Nice group shot, good lighting to go with it. Oh and the SSS looks pretty good. Not too translucent nor is it too subtle. Only note from me is that Vincent is a touch shiny on his arms.

Finally, your light match is super close to the source. Hard to believe they're not different models rendered in the same scene. Good job!

    A for week 3 👍

gradyp glad I could help. You're work sure is amazing. Especially those characters. Great work

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

@theluthier I think I felt like something was missing.. and that subtle red light underneath... I completely missed that!

    thanks for the comments!

And looking back, I think those backgrounds on Victor and Vincent didn't work quite as well as I would have liked. but your right.. that purple does look better :D I thought I'd fixed the glossiness of Vincent's arm, but I must have missed it :D Glad it looked good otherwise :D

    yyukinoh1989 Thanks. :D

Making a little progress on my work for this week. I'm using Eevee while I get started on the materials, but plan to switch to cycles as I get it closer to done to dial things in.

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied
One thing I have noticed:  Eevee's refraction /transparency seems to behave very differently from Cycles, in a way that's not very realistic. It could be me not setting things up right, but I've tried tweaking settings and it just never seems to behave the way it would in IRL (or in Cycles).

gradyp  good progress ! the scene feels too symetric , u may frame in a different way .

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

mmalhomsi Oh, I'm not done.. I'll show it off from different angles.

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

I'm a little disappointed in my results this week because I know I can (and have) done better. The curtains, in particular, really gave me trouble and when I started unwrapping to get the wood textures to go the right way.. it was a nightmare. A prime example of where good geometry makes the job so much easier.

Still, It's not all bad and I have been a little under the weather the last couple of days.

Room model is from MapleStudios on blendswap.

The book titles...if you can't read them.. Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, Kent Trammell's Little Book of Blender Secrets, The Honest Politician by Ima Lyon, How to Win an Argument With Your Spouse by Chi S. Wong and Noh E. S. Wong, and Resolving Conflict by Ima Wong and Ura Wright.

(BTW, the stripes and the patterns on the curtain... all procedural.)

For the light match exercise... One thing I've struggled with is getting the light fall off correct. I think I'm learning that a larger lamp really close with a low strength with have a sharper fall off and a larger, stronger lamp will have sharper shadows and cast them further. For this week's, I used this Low poly deer by Lennart Fogh on Artstation:

    TARGET

Here is my result... which, except for how the light shows on the background, I'm mostly happy with.

    Also did a colored version

Wish I would have had more time to do the book covers.. among other things.

Kent Trammell's Little Book of Blender Secrets

It would be a little book! 😅 Heh I like that kind of easter egg. You know by now that one of your living room renders made it into my faves. It's an A from me - really nice Eevee work.

Your light match is very close. The biggest difference I see is that the light's effect on the floor/background is more noticeable than in the source. Seeing that effect clearly tends to distract from the focus of the model. All things considered it's still a fairly small note. It's a B from me 👍

@theluthier Well.. hope this doesn't disappoint too much.. .but I was only using Eevee as I was setting up the materials. As I got closer, I did use Cycles for the final renders.

I almost made one of the big books a "Kent Trammell" book too, but didn't have time to do that justice :D

And as for whether it would be  a big book or not.. you do have a lot of wisdom to share... even if you don't realize it :D Why do you think Captain Disillusion gave you such a hard time about 19 hour tutorials? ;)

  • Kent Trammell replied

gradyp You fooled me! Heh well I couldn't tell that you transitioned to Cycles. So that says something.

And LOL about Captain Disillusion's crack at my 19hr tutorial(s). That had me rolling 🤣
