swikni Thanks Jere, the plants are a very low rez version of some tropical foliage that grows around here. Wish I knew the name. I took some reference photos. The main stalk looks like a bunch of eyes peering at you.

jakeblended Once I was able to wrap my mind around the fact that the GP object has its own Edit, Sculpt, Draw, etc. modes that is when I was able to create something. Playing with the different drawing tools helped get the look I wanted. Then I switched to GP sculpt mode and could further modify them. It can be pretty fun. There are features like special effects that I haven't tried yet, but I was able to make a couple of GP materials for the flame.

yyukinoh1989 Arigato! The detail in the bricks was made by subdividing the cube to get more detail and then by using the proportional editing mode (O hotkey) with randomize selected, I grabbed one vertex and moved it. The other vertices danced around a bit and gave the brick an uneven look. I used multiple Array modifiers to populate the wall.

silentheart00 Thanks! I liked the Grease Pencil a lot. I know some folks that animate with Flash. I think they will be interested in this new development.

thecabbagedetective Many thanks Aaron. I was looking for the quick flame particle system feature for the torch, but couldn't find it in 2.8. So I thought that this would be as good a time as any to sharpen my skills with the new Grease Pencil tool. It is a timid beginning, but I think it will be a fun tool to explore.

  • silentheart00 replied

ullreym Yeah, in the blender livestream today they said the particle systems in 2.8 are messed up.  Resourceful idea, though.

ullreym That Grease Pencil flame, Matthew...Yes the modeling is good but I'm drooling over that flame 🤤

Very nice touch. Besides that, I like that you focused on modifier-based modeling. The torch holder itself is very interesting in shape; well executed. Overall it's an A+ in my book. Well done 👏

  • Matthew Ullrey(ullreym) replied

@theluthier Thanks Kent! Careful with that drool, you might put the fire out. Ha ha. The torch holder used a combination of the twist deformer along a curve. Your demonstration with the phone cord last Tuesday was perfect for this.

    Week 3 Homework Submission

Here is my Melvin sculpt, primitive shapes, and head sculpt projects. I found with the sculpting that in Dyntopo mode the Subdivide Collapse mode was great for general details from far away, but I had to switch over to Subdivide Edges to get some of the finer details. But before I could do that, I needed to add a lot of resolution with the Inflate tool and smooth it out.

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

Nice head sculpt, ullreym ! Great job on Melvin too!

  • Jere Haapaharju(swikni) replied

ullreym Melvin looks so aggressive that I wouldn't bum a cigarette from him. Very nice detailing everywhere.

The face sculpt is very natural. Can't see anything there that is wrong and you did the hair too. Love it

ps. It's hard to believe that you did those primitives by sculpting. They look like freshly added meshes. Awesome work!

  • Matthew Ullrey(ullreym) replied

swikni Thanks Jere, I had some help with the primitives. I used mirrored axis settings  a bunch to help with symmetry. Melvin would probably tell you that cigarettes are bad for your lungs just before he reached in and ripped them out..... I guess he does look a bit aggressive. ;-)

  • Pavel Mazanik(nekronavt) replied

    ullreym nice work!

  • silentheart00 replied

Good work!  The sculpts are a little bumpy, but you can smooth that out.  Proportions look good.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

ullreym looking very nice! You continue to produce quality models 😬👍🏻

  • Matthew Ullrey(ullreym) replied

silentheart00 Thanks, yes those bumps.... they won't last long after a good retopology. Sometimes I would forget which Edge collapse or divide mode I would be in. Then, I would zoom out and smooth something and all the detail would be erased and I had to start that section over again. That was a bit frustrating.

  • Matthew Ullrey(ullreym) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Thank you for the encouragement! I want to do my best, but time was a big factor this week. A large portion of the head sculpt was done in an exit row seat on a 737. Ha ha. I balanced my pen tablet on my lap and the laptop on the tray table. Thankfully there was little turbulence.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

    ullreym Wow, that's dedication!! 😃👊🏻

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

ullreym Jeeeeeeeez that Melvin, and I thought I put in some nice details. Utterly fantastic, gives him a whole different vibe.
