    Good work here.

    Thanks for the feedback!

nekronavt You're right about that. I wasn't too sure how much the violin pushes those keys down or does it at all. It's just always an awful thought that everything in the scene looks weightless and obstacles just hover on top of each other

    swikni Gorgeous!

  • Kent Trammell replied

swikni I don't have much to say other than...what a beautiful job. Classy instruments, classy modeling. Not easy models either. Awesome work, Jere: A++ 👏

    Week 3 Homework

I tried to sculpt the primitives with 2.8 and for some reason it felt so horrible that after half an hour I just had to quit. The menus and hotkeys didn't work for me at all and of course I tried to figure them out but.. there wasn't any logic I guess.

The primitives went down pretty basic, nothing too amazing there and I was planning to make Melvin again but to be honest I stuck maybe too much playing Starcraft 2 this week lol.

In the head sculpt I had some hard time with the eyelids and for some reason the ear just didn't come to me at all. Luckily they seem to be pretty decent in the final render and I'm happy with the ending result

Here's my old Melvin, primitives and head:

    swikni Good stuff!

Your ear looks perfectly fine to me, form-wise.  I think probably the only thing I would do is rotate it a little - top half toward the left, bottom to the right, to make it more vertically-straight - and then maybe move it and the jawline leading up to it a little closer to the front of the head, but of course heads are different so that isn't necessarily so.  But you achieved a realistic form there, don't worry.

swikni Good work.  The lighting on the head is a little subtle, so it's hard to see the details you sculpted.

swikni Great job Jere! Is it a self portrait? Look a bit like you 😊

  • Jere Haapaharju(swikni) replied

jakeblended Oh yeah you are right! The angle of the ear was difficult since I'm not bold and not too willing to cut my hair lol. I've should have checked some images of bold people to get the basics even but was too stuck in the pictures of my own head duh.

silentheart00 Absolutely, the jaw  for example is almost invisible because of the lighting. Maybe baking AO map would do the trick also.

ssmurfmier1985 Yes I used pictures of me as a reference. I was so uncertain of the looking alike thing but it's nice to hear that there is even something that matces in there. Thanks!

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

Overall, looks great Jere! If anything, on the ear, it might be a little large and too far back (hard to say for sure in this angle, but pretty sure it is) which could be why you're feeling off on it, but like jakeblended said, the form looks great.  You might try blocking in some hair and see if that makes the ear feel more natural as well.

  • Matthew Ullrey(ullreym) replied

swikni Those primitive shapes are sweet looking... literally. I think I can guess their flavor. The head sculpt has an eerie almost life like look to it. Great work!

  • Jere Haapaharju(swikni) replied

gradyp Yeah maybe I should try some hair on it. Thanks! ullreym Haha I didn't even think the primitives as something to eat when I added shaders on them but now.. they do look sweet.

  • Pavel Mazanik(nekronavt) replied

swikni good job. It's recognizable, that you use your face as a reference. :)

  • Jere Haapaharju(swikni) replied

    nekronavt Thanks!

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

swikni Yes, another returns to 2.7! The Resistance strengthens,

I feel you on the playing too, though for me it's XCOM 2. Just one more mission... another five 95% chance shots missed... the aliens aren't gonna defeat themselves...

  • Kent Trammell replied

swikni Nice job this week, Jere. I've certainly been there, when the ear just doesn't turn out the way you'd hoped. It's a very weird shape. In this sculpt it looks a little too tacked on and not incorporated into overall head anatomy. With heads the ear area indents slightly. Here's a good example from the back: Image result for back of the ear

Overall it's a solid head sculpt. The lighting washes out the shapes a bit but lighting isn't the point here. A+ this week 👏

  • Jere Haapaharju(swikni) replied

@theluthier Thanks! I seriously should concentrate figuring that ear thing out

  • Jere Haapaharju(swikni) replied

thecabbagedetective Haha more self discipline is needed! Lol. I truly wanted to use 2.8 but just couldn't do it with the sculpt mode.

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

swikni Jere I just realized that somehow did not follow your week2 exercise, that was extra good!

Next week I will check your week3 one (joking of course :D), I think it is always a brave attempt to model ourselves

  • Jere Haapaharju(swikni) replied

csehz I can't blame you for a week delay since I red your post minute ago lol. It's never too late!
