The wing (fan) is done :D, Im starting to work on the main body.

aaaltuvem Those edges, *so* crisp. I need to up my smoothness game.

  • Andres Altuve(aaltuvem) replied

thecabbagedetective Thanks :D, dude this project has been a real challenge but I'm loving it, I feel like I'm giving birth lol... Hopefully will have more done by tomorrow.

aaaltuvem Wow, this is looking amazing! I can learn a thing of two from you, such nice edges 😊

  • Andres Altuve(aaltuvem) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Thanks Miranda, I don't know what you can learn from me but If you have a question I will more than happy to try to help you out! 😊

  • smurfmier1985 replied

aaaltuvem well I was wondering how you the rotor nice and askew, did you use a modifier or placed it by hand? Is it attached to the middle part or have you stick it through? Just curious, it looks nice 🙂

ssmurfmier1985 Hi Miranda, answering your questions.

how you the rotor nice and askew,?

I created a cylinder with 27 divisions no cap, then added two edges on top and used the distance between the edges to get the thickness of the fan. Then added two more edges on the bottom part with the same distance. Then divided 27 by 3 since I just need 3 fans and got that I needed nine faces, so the next step is to disolve the top and bottom edges in the same 9 faces and finally join the top ones with the botton ones using the knife tool. Then deleted the faces i didn't need.

did you use a modifier or placed it by hand?  By hand, I only know two modifiers, mirror and subdivision surfaces.

Is it attached to the middle part or have you stick it through? stick

  • smurfmier1985 replied

aaaltuvem Thank you for your clear explanation! I'm also most familiar with those too modifiers, first ones you learn 🙂 I think you you did this very nicely, smart to use the knife tool, and the result looks great 😁

Small update, after a couple of test I was able to make the body, I eneded up using a Sphere to get a rough shape, today I will finish the body and then get into details. Hopefully I will finish this by tomorrow and submit the homework.

  • Andres Altuve(aaltuvem) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Thanks Miranda, it has been really hard, but I've learn so much that is totally worth it. After I'm done here I will finish the modeling Bootcamp course and learn new things and get better at this.

  • Zsolt Cseh(csehz) replied

aaaltuvem Andres I adore your consequent working style, exact plan what you aim to learn and how much time spending on it, thanks for sharing in such details.

Your Week2 submission is quite ambitious and the WIP already looks promising, keeping the fingers crossed to finish till the deadline

  • smurfmier1985 replied

aaaltuvem Another nice WIP, I think it's great you're learning so much that's the most important part, keep it up you're doing great!

  • Andres Altuve(aaltuvem) replied

ssmurfmier1985, csehz  thanks guys! hopefully I will be able to finish.. At the moment I'm stuck in the middle part.

I came up with the solution of connecting the last edge in the end to where that part should end, added couple of edges using the knife tool and shape it a little bit.

Here is the result, a nice curve and now working on the details, hopefully this solution will work if not start from scratch that part again.

So far, besides learning the tools and how the edges flow and how affects the mesh I also learnt that a 3D model is like programming, a model is like a big problem that has to be broken in small problems then solve each little problem to resolve the whole thing. That is the approach im using.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

aaaltuvem that's a great description of how it works, good approach too! If this doesn't work for the curved shape you could try using proportional editing, don't know if you know it? If not I could find a video for you which uses that approach to create this kind of a curved surface for an anvil base (but maybe you already know it, it's from blenderguru). It's usually faster than the knife tool for this kind of thing and usually gives a more balanced result, better flow in the shape.

  • Andres Altuve(aaltuvem) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Hi Miranda, I have no idea what proportional editing is, Im going to look for that video! Thanks for the tip!!

All this info you're sharing is 💰. Thanks for that! And your model is really coming along nicely. Quite fun to follow. Keep it up!

@theluthier Thanks Kent! Still a long way to go..
