Welcome, fellow cosmic traveler in search of delicious crumbs of Blender wisdom.
I'll go first: my name is Wes and I founded CG Cookie over 10 years ago...and then immediately forgot why I called it that. 😅Besides 3d art, I'm obsessed with motorcycles, coffee, and creating projects that bring people together. You can learn more about me at http://wesburke.com
You see, I just love the buzz of creative energy that's generated by us humans making stuff...whether that's decaf coffee, bike engines, or computer graphics.
When I'm not on my Peloton or tweaking my bike in the garage, I'm wrestling hanging out with my 4 kids (yes, four!) or putting out fires - mostly digital ones.
So now I'm curious - what's your name and why are you here?
Say hi and share your story with us, and don't worry - we only bite cookies around here.
Hi, Im Travez Ripley, I’m reliving my youth by returning to Hard-Surface Modeling. I have been modeling in CAD/Parametric software for the past Ten years as an Engineer, Designer and Fabricator. Well I’m back to learn Blender. Oh here’s a picture of My Stafford De$mond. I‘m married, but I’m into Poly-Gon…. Lol
TL;DR:
Had this account dormant for 10 years, now due to work reasons, I'm doing a crash course learning blender within a month. Nice to meet you all and wish me luck!
Hey all!
My Name is Michael Durkopp. Nice to meet you all!
I actually had this account for a long time, February 26th, 2012 according to my profile (10 YEARS !? O_o). But it was rarely used and didn't signup for the membership. Mainly because at the time, I was using blender for fun and it wasn't really serious as I was using it to help my brother with effects in 24 hour film jams. Or for stuff on my YouTube channel (I'll post vids on where I used blender back in the day)
Though I lost interest due to going in IT for my career, but kept tabs on blender as I really did enjoy using and creating blender. (I didn't follow through being a 3D artiest due to a horribly mismanaged summer boot camp from a technical college made me decide to not pursue it.)
Fast forward to just last week, I mentioned to my team in the company that I work for (I work as a lab tech for a certain M$ company as a vender) that I was getting a 3D scanner soon and they got excited about it. Somehow, one thing led to another and the team I'm working with decided to get cameras, lighting and other stuff with a Gamer PC that can run Blender like a champ for video production, mainly for 'How to' videos and visual documentation. Which is the absolute opposite of what I'm paid to do, but I didn't care.
But then I realized that I need to have knowledge on a 3D program in order to make use of a 3D scanner. I remembered this account and immediately dusted it off and got a membership to essentially do a crash course in blender before the 3D scanner arrives in March.
So my teams plan is to scan servers and devices that we use and use them in animations or presentations to better illustrate said devices and servers. That and my team also works with HoloLens 2 and we want some objects to be available for use.
On top of that I will also model some items that we use, along with animating and other visual effects using blender. Along with unity and my own fun as well ;-)
Wish me luck on my blender journey! And nice to meet you all!
Videos I worked with blender back in the day :
Pit of Greed ,72 hour film jam, Blender was used for the title card. It was supposed to be a brick wall, but somehow it looked more like a produce sack which worked out GREAT for the theme of the video.
Robot, This is OLD Jan 23, 2011. Blender was used for the title and uh....the "robot". This was done when blender had yet to get camera tracking. At least reliably. Honestly, the fact that me and my brother had access to adobe aftereffects in high school and no knowledge in Blender at the time was a miracle that we pulled this off. it's cringe though.
Unused intro for my Youtube channel on my Google drive. Kinda to bad because I loved how it turned out.

Hey mmichael57, welcome back to the Cookie and we're glad to have you. What a cool story and thanks for sharing it. Anxious to see what you and the team come up with. Happy Blending!
What a cool story indeed - Welcome back mmichael57! May your learning be swift and your application effective ✊
Nice to meet you all, my name is Michal, and I've been developing my 3D skills for a little over 2 years now. I signed up today in hopes of having some more materials to learn from, especially as I'll be trying to look for work in the 3D modeling space starting this week! If anyone is interested in my work, I also have a website that I update regularly with my projects:
https://dragonzonestudios.com/
and here are two of my recently uploaded 3D works:
https://dragonzonestudios.com/staunton-chess-set/

Hoping to learn a lot from this community, very excited to keep learning more in the 3D space!
Hi Michal,
Its great that you are here.
Thanks for sharing some of your work here, they look awesome.
Apologies for having replied in the wrong "subthread" when I tried to introduce myself.
I've only used up a few weeks of my one-year subscription and I am grateful for the library of tutorials offered here.
Yet I have to give up: I don't get Blender.
RANT: Why do I have to travel kilometres and kilometres to finish what should be "simple" workflows? No, I don't use the keyboard when I use the mouse et vice versa. If I use the tablet/stylus, I simply don't have a full-blown keyboard available. I use a 3dmouse and a normal mouse (or a stylus) for working in 3d. OR the keyboard. Software should adopt to users' preferences, not the other way around.
Why is it (sometimes?) soooooo sloooow? Why is dealing with a mere 10 million points feeling like we're 20 years back in time? Isn't there a "static mesh mode" or some intelligent "only load geometry to memory within a certain boundary" or whatever to make "normal" mesh sizes at least manageable? Data I handle for clients goes up to hundreds of millions of points, I fully accept that a simple do-it-yourself tool can't do that, perfectly fine. But a few million should be "standard", we're in the 21st century.
Why don't the different "areas" (modules?) use the same UXP? It feels like "glued together" - as if I have to learn half a dozen programs instead of just one. Can't there be an "overarching usability" defined? I would like to use Blender as a tool to get things done, yet it feels (to me) as if I need to learn a ton of things ONLY to use Blender in order to use Blender with the sole goal of using Blender. What I want to do is of no concern, using Blender FEELS like a means to an end, there's only Blender.
/RANT
I know I am ungrateful, I know Blender is considered "free", but it is not: It costs your life-time, and it is too expensive in that respect. As an experimental environment where one can try out tricks, optimize algorithms, lab-out on ideas, Blender definitely is worth its sourcecode in -insert-fantasy-term-. As a tool to get things done I don't see how it could work for me with the ... best way to put it is "chaotic" UXP it offers.
Sorry for loading this off here. I am happy to pay money to someone to take me by the hand and run me through a project, I don't want my money back for cgcookie, but I only have a couple of years left on my life, I do not want to waste them learning something that is only good for itself ...
My name is Erik. I have been learning Blender since 2.79 but I still feel like a beginner.
I have a job that has me looking at a lot of construction drawings, so I find myself thinking about what it would take to do 3d models of buildings. In particular I am fascinated by concrete buildings in the Brutalist style, and I wonder what it would take to model things like that.
I am a member of a users group that was meeting in a library until the lockdown happened, and then started meeting on Zoom. Even after the library re-opened to the public we decided to stay on Zoom because it's easy to screen share the software demo and some of us live far away from the library.
Hi Erik,
Its sounds like you have are a committed group of users, we are glad to have you here in our community.
3d artistry is a huge topic to learn, thankfully here at CGC we have probably the best tutors of Blender 3D you will find, and the most awesome community, with so many members willing to help guide and offer suggestions to those who need it.
Welcome to our community.
Happy Blending!
Hi, everybody! My name is Wendy. I'm 28 years old. And I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I started learning Blender about 7 months ago and I immediately fell in love with it!😍 I had been trying to learn computer coding but it wasn't quite what was I was looking for. Then I heard about 3D modeling and I was like "That sounds like fun. Let me look into it." ENTER: Blender. Immediately I was like "This is what I've been looking for! This is so much fun!"😆 Since then I've been hopping from YouTube tutorial to YouTube tutorial. Shout out to Andrew Price. I think of him as my main teacher in the basics of Blender. Did the Donut Tutorial. 🍩Did the chair. Watched his video course about lighting. I learned A LOT from his channel. After a while though I started to feel like I wasn't learning as much from Youtube but I was still missing so much information. 🤔Only problem was I didn't know WHERE the gaps were exactly in my Blender knowledge. 🤷🏼♀️ Then I found CGCookie and I fell in love again!🥰 I was drawn in by the HUMAN course (WIP) and the Pothead course (also WIP). This website is amazing! I really appreciate the structure of the lessons and in depth detail the teachers give. It gives me a clear path to follow in order to keep learning. I'm recommending it to people who don't even know what Blender is.😂 Although when they ask what kind of stuff I'm working on and I say "Pothead" it does take some explaining. Not many of my friends are into Blender so I'm glad I found people who DO understand! I try and talk to people about vertices and retopology, texturing and lighting and it's like I'm speaking a different language. Now I have a place where people not only understand my struggles but can even help me with them! Thank you so much for the videos and for responding to my questions! Keep up the amazing work and I look forward to meeting more artist and seeing more of everyone's art work!😎
Hello Wes. First of all, congrats on this amazing learning platform. I researched a lot and I guess this is the best out there.
I'm a writer by profession and a computer graphics enthusiast, as new to Blender as I'm old in age (57 yrs). I have 2 adult sons and 3 grandchildren who unfortunately live more than 6,000 miles apart.
Hey I"m Max, I"m 35 and I'm on day 40 of learning Blender. I knew for a long time I wanted to do something in Graphics Design, but I wasn't sure what. I started with JavaScript coding. Went through 75% of the course before stopping. It wasn't really for me. I'm 85% sure Character Sculpting is what I want to do. I"ve learned the basics of Blender, did a few animation tutorials and modeling tutorials, and sculpted. I'm working on HUMAN course now and looking forward to learning everything I can from CGCookie and its community.
COOL! That's a lot like my story! Were you learning JavaScript on Khan Academy? That's where I was learning it. Except I didn't make it that far. I was like 15% through the course.
Hi everyone.
Im Jon, I'm 35 and from the UK. I've recently joined the community, having previously spent a few years using Cinema 4D as my primary 3D tool. I'd tried to move across to blender in the 2.8 update, and spent a while going through various tutorials on youtube, though with varying success (always ended up going back to Cinema 4D when I needed to do something fast).
I've just got myself a new job working with 3D again (after taking a break from it) and decided now would be a good time to focus my efforts on really learning and adopting blender as my primary modelling software. CGCookie seemed a great place to further my knowledge of 3D in general (this stagnated a bit, and I wanted to learn some more advanced techniques - such as what's demonstrated in the HUMAN and Pot Head courses). I'm gradually bringing myself up to speed with the beginner stuff first, so hope to progress on to those in the coming weeks.
I'm a bit of a generalist - I love modelling and texturing, but i'm also keen to explore more animation and rigging concepts, and work more on my lighting & rendering.
Some of the previous work I've done:
A take on the famous Futurama head tank. Made with Blender, C4D and Substance Painter.
Hi everyone,
My name is Boris, I am married and have an awesome 4yr old son. As of recent I live in Ireland.
I've worked mostly as receptionist but starting pandemic, I've decided to make a change in career path. Since my hobbies were mostly around games, art, board games, miniature painting etc. I've decided to try Blender, at first mostly because I was interested in 3d printing and wanted to do my own models. In the meantime after doing some courses from the other sites/youtube I've seen that the Blender and 3d is so vast and interesting that I got a bit lost. Took some time off as the life continued in it's own unexpected ways, and now when the things settled a bit I've decided to go full into it.
I was familiar before with Cg Cookie, and now have decided to join as I really like what I see so far!
Looking forward to meet you all, and to the journey which is Blender:)
