Pokémon Challenge 2022-Infernape-WIP

Contests and Challenges

Knowing nothing about Pokémon, I spend a few days doing some, very pleasent, 'research'.

It is very hard to choose one, but I eventually decided to go with this monkey. (Apparently it's not an ape when it has a tail...)

Started with a blockout to try and get the proportions more or less right. Already found that this is going to be a lot harder than I thought:

I decided to model him/her in 'Ape-pose', to take advantage of the Mirror Modifier. Of course the is no reference for a neutral pose, but having an Armature will make posing easier and maybe there is time left for a little animation.

The plan is to use Hair on the body and a Fire sim for the, you guessed it, fire.

    Excellent spikeyxxx ,

Looking forward to seeing your progress

Wow, love the reference!!! Awesome selection, spikeyxxx Good luck on the modeling and sculpting. I know it's gonna be exceptional.

  • Sébastien Lenaerts(slenaerts) replied

Nice one! Love your choice and looking forward to see  it!

  • Keith (beefkeef) replied

This is an interesting choice for sure, can't wait to see the progress Spikey! 👍

  • Mel C(melinmotion) replied

TIL it is not an ape. How could the Pokemon naming guy do that? Anyway, I will be looking forward to see your progress!

  • Wendy Robinson(wendy10698) replied

Cool! Can't wait to see it when it's finished!

The beginning progresses really slow (something I have often, it takes time for me to get into the model, get a feeling for the shape(s) and so).

Not following the standard workflow (I am not a professional, so I don't have to follow the 'rules'...), but just experimenting with hair:

Nice work spikeyxxx , you got the look right, and the hair looks great and styled nicely, you would make a great barber ✂.

  • spikeyxxx replied

Still taking it slow, but soon now I can start with the fun parts:

And a bit further, still a lot of exciting stuff to be done and what is there is definitely not final, shapes will change and the hair also needs a lot of love (just experimenting with the general look), but it's slowly comming to life:

    I'm loving this spikeyxxx ,

The shape of the eyes look menacing, and great likeness to the reference.

  • Wendy Robinson(wendy10698) replied

That looks awesome!! =D Can't wait to see it with flames!!

  • spikeyxxx replied

    As requested; with fire:

Now it's time to stop playing around and get to work:

    Sculpting

    Retopology

    Baking

Maybe Unwrapping and a little Texture Painting

Building an Armature (probably just use Rigify)

    Weight Painting

    Posing

    Lighting

See what I will do about a background.

    and of course Rendering.

Sounds like a lot and it is, but with more than 10 days left, this should be do-able.

  • Wendy Robinson(wendy10698) replied

    AWESOME!! =D

  • Wendy Robinson(wendy10698) replied

Lol. Gives me flashbacks to Andrew's Donut Tutorial. He says: "If you finish this first video then I promise you that at the end we will set a monkey head on fire." And we did. XD

After a few days of failed attempts, finally found a  direction, I am happy with:

A bit of an older Infernape, but don't worry, he's still got fire!

When the Sculpting is done, things should speed up quite a bit, I hope...I can already smell the deadline :)

Luckily it's mostly face, fingers and toes that need sculpting attention, as the rest of the body will be covered anyway.

  • spikeyxxx replied

Finished sculpting for now (some details might still follow later, when time allows):

I was lazy and thought to sculpt one finger and the duplicate it a few times. But then I somehow had to combine the fingers with the hand, so I Remeshed and then I got this sort of a mess:

Had the time of my life, trying to fix that!

I'll take a break now (it's sunny at the moment :D) and then I'll start the retopology.

  • Wendy Robinson(wendy10698) replied

Wow! 😯It‘s really coming together! 😄👍🏼

  • spikeyxxx replied

Retopo mostly done, although hands and feet are not the easiest part to retopologize:

    1213 Vertices so far.

Taking a break now, but after that I need to at least finish the retopo.
