I'm currently working through the Fundamentals of Lighting Course and there's a recommendation to create a community progress thread. So here we go.
I'll start by posting a few recent works, and take it from there.
Thanks beefkeef ! It's nice to get a few of these directed projects under my belt. Hoping to fill in a few more gaps in my learning and move onto some custom projects soon.
Finally finished the sculpting chapter of the character intro course. I'm not sure if I love the hat, but the rest turned out fairly well.
After previewing the next few vids, I think I'll need to take a short break to get the hang of this whole retopo thing... maybe take a few chapters of the mesh modeling bootcamp. With any luck I'll be back to finish this up before long.
Yeah! That looks sweet! Very impressed with your creases in the clothes, you've killed it!
Gonna have to disagree with you about the hat - I think it looks great too! 😅
Thanks beefkeef . For some reason, after an intense bout of sculpting, I tend to dislike what I've created until I step away from it for a little bit... maybe I was just staring at it for too long. It looks a lot better to me today. Thanks for the kind feedback.
Started working on the mesh modelling bootcamp from @jlampel and completed exercise 1
Also completed the first exercise of the Fundamentals of Texturing (which I've been putting off). Might've made the lava a little too "glowey", but it takes about an hour and a half to render on my laptop, and I didn't feel like waiting.
Node groups were pretty large, I couldn't fit the rock setup in the first screen shot:
Also, resubmitted the lighting exercise that I've posted a few times already. No major changes, so I'm not going to repost it on the thread. If anyone wants to be a pal and grade these, it would be much appreciated:

Finally got back to working on the Pilot character. The scarf and hair are now done. Gonna skim the intro to retopology tutorials next week and then start on the retopo.
So I finally got through this guy. It is quite a long course, and still breezes through the topics of retopology, weight-painting, and rigging pretty quickly. Most stuff was pretty easy to follow, there were a few times I had to google some UI changes, but it was fairly easy to find the answers (weight painting was perhaps a tad more difficult). A very informative course overall though, with a good instructor.
I don't know how visible these progress threads are these days, as "last updated" doesn't seem to be the default sort order anymore. I might not bother to update this one any more, and just stick to posting in the gallery, but I thought I would post the finished pilot model in here for the sake of completeness.
He turned out pretty well. I found the rigging portion of the course a little challenging, and probably need to seek out a bit more material on rigging at some point. I think I'll come back and try to do the full texture process with this guy some time in the future, but I'm eager to move on for the moment.
