I've been away from Blender for several years (back when it was version 2.7x - things have changed!!) - but I'm now back to relearn and re-hone my skills!
I've realised I need a creative outlet, and I find 3D modelling to be the best combination of all my interests.
I don't normally publish a lot of my stuff (a few items from a few years ago, but not a lot I'm especially proud of), but I figured I could create a workbook here, and post stuff as I go without too much pressure about it being "gallery worthy".
So I'll post stuff as I go, and see how things go!
So here's my latest project - only getting back to Blender, so really focusing on basic modelling at this stage.
I really like the steampunk aesthetic, and seemed like a good modelling challenge. The main shapes are all complete now, and I need to do a little amount of detailed / "roughing up" pieces, then really focus on the texturing and lighting, and try to get it work in an interesting scene.
damn i love it , great work , it looks sonice and knowing that you still arent finished makes me look forward to the final scene of this :D
Finalising some modelling details, playing about with the lighting, and having fun in the compositor... I've reached a point where I'm happy to call it finished (I think...!)
The start of my next project - initial block out, hopefully add some refinement over the weekend
Ok, so not as much progress as I'd hoped for over the weekend - the sun came out and the pubs were open again...
Still, managed to get the all the main elements of the arms complete. Further details will be added in the refining stage.
Managed to find a few hours this weekend to complete the major leg forms:
And did a quick, cheeky render (default material, just a HDRI thrown in):
Now I need to put the effort in to complete the main head area... Gonna be a fair chunk of work - stay tuned!
This is looking really good Tom! I can't wait to see how it turns out :)
Thanks frikkr - just trying to find the time to work on it - I will get there soon!
Finally managed to complete all the major forms:
Some basic colouring to help show the main forms:
Now one last pass to complete the final details...
All modelling finally completed! Hopefully get the surface details in through the texturing.
Now to start UV unwrapping...
Almost complete! Just plan to tweak in the compositor!
Let me know any thoughts before I finish up this project :)
Thought I'd have a play with 2.93 geometry nodes! Absolutely not my work, followed tutorial here: https://youtu.be/DQVYieRfQBY
I'm starting to understand what they're about, but it does require completely changing your view of how to manipulate 3d data!
I can't wait for a course about them here... I'm sure there's something baking in the CG Cookie oven ;) @jlampel @theluthier
This looks amazing. I enjoyed looking through the progress in this thread, those UV really are a work of art in their own right.
Great work through out 👍
Definitely a new skill to learn.

Thank you! I've got distracted by geometry, but I need to decide on my next project...
