This is an on-going thread documenting my progress through the 2021 Collab Project.
I am so happy to be here!
List of homework submission:
Homework Submission - Week 1 - Flowers
Okay, so the plan for week 1 is to play around with different flower types and different approaches to create low-poly flowers. Keep in mind that not all flowers produced will fit the art style or the type of flowers seen in the picture. In this case it will be science only.
I think the biggest twist will be to keep the vert count in check.
I will try to post nothing without a picture, so here goes my childish first day attempt of creating flowers:
Vertex count missed the mark by factor 4 or so, but I will worry about that later.
WIP - Day 2 - Flowers
Spent the day sitting at work and not getting anything done. Guess I am really looking forward to the weekend.
Was researching a lot during the evening and kept checking the overall progress of others to look for inspiration.
To be honest, I am struggling a bit, since the information about flowers in the artwork is not much more than a few splashes of paint in the grass.
I believe we will end up modelling and partially sculpting flowers with a fairly high complexity, baking the whole thing and bringing the information back to very simple geometry, which can be used in the final scene. Maybe even just blossoms on top of the grass without any additional structure. But it is too early to make decisions.
Here is one of today's experiments with a higher vert-count. I've figured we can use some more geometry, if we are ending up baking the final result anyways:
Tomorrow I will look into the sapling addon to create plants for my smaller creations. Also I want to visit the particle system to figure out if it can be used for details on the blossoms and leaf-distribution.
really nice work , youre right its hard to decide what flowers to model so i am also doing the same, modelling them randomly as i have my references and then see what could be used :). i still never baked anything (exept in the kitchen xD ) so i would say if possible i would love to see the progress of that magic trick :)
Yea buddy, you and me both! ;)
But I guess we will figure it out during the Collab. It seems like the right place to 'grow'.
True indeed, just this week alone i learned so much already . (even tryed some other stuff like bushes etc for fun)
WIP - Day 3 - Flowers
The plan for today was to decide on a set of flowers to build over the weekend and start with the first few.
Ended up napping a lot - achieving basically nothing.
I have played around with the sapling tool and started using particle systems to distribute leaves and blossoms.
Worked out okay, but needs a lot of tweaking, if I want to use it for some flowers I am going to build.
But all of that has to wait until tomorrow. Here is today's result:
WIP - Day 4 - Flowers
Who decided to rate flowers one star? :D
All biological objects are hard to model by default, the picture is not giving away anything and the style of flowers will highly depend on other objects in the area. Really challenging to come up with a solid result, that will fit into the bigger picture ...
Today I was just playing around with different styles and techniques. Tomorrow I will visit other nature threads and model three or four final flowers which will hopefully fit well into the scene.
Here are some of today's results:
Let me know, what you think!
damn that starlike flower is wonderfull , love it :D , as well nice work with the pink and rose flower(it has lots of details =D)
Homework Submission - Week 1 - Flowers
Since I am close to midnight, here are my results for week 1:
I have split my work into three pieces:
For now, I have created five blossoms that I feel comfortable sharing:
In addition, I have designed four basic leaves, that can be used to build any flower with some variations of those leaves:
At last some examples I quickly put together to show all pieces together:
(I will build final versions during week 2 after seeing the results of all nature teams.)
Finally, one honorable mention, because I feel like this is my best creation so far, even though it does not fit the art style at all and will not be used in this project:
Please let me know, what you think. I am pretty new to creating organic models and it was a real struggle during the week.
Oh, and don't worry: I don't plan to keep this much geometry throughout the project. Planning to bake leaves and blossoms and reduce poly count to something between 50-250 verts for each flower.
Damn, have forgotten to let Kent know ... @theluthier

Thank you so much, gentlemen! Your positive feedback really helps to stay motivated for the project.
Was slightly regretting my nature choice because I am pretty new to organic modelling. And having to manage work and the Collab at the same time is challenging.
But at the end this is exactly how it is supposed to be, right?
spikeyxxx Boss, please get in here and make a statement, what you expect from the flower crew for week 2:
Thank you so much for your efforts. Really appreciate your commitment to the project and all members of the team!
Have a look at Kents expectations for the flowers in Daphne's WIP thread

So,
no sculpting
do try to keep the Vertex count low (using whatever methods you can think of)
work on how to distribute the flowers
the poppy seeds seem a bit overkill to model, but painting them or even just a suggestion of them would be fine
as for the types of flower; look at the artwork and give your own interpretation of what you see, or what you think might fit well in the scene (very vague, I know, but you shouldn't feel too restricted in your choices)
Just wanted to say that I love your daisy configuration. I think a multi flowerhead flower (or whatever that is called) would fit really nice here:
I'm FINALLY here to give you some feedback bun-bun! Sorry for the delay - apparently 100+ people takes a while to grade 😅
Your flowers look fantastic. Very well-built and I have no doubt they will populate the ground beautifully. I'll give you the same direction as the other flower children: Your task will be one of optimization to ensure many flowers can be populated while not burdening the performance of the scene.
Currently I categorize your flowers as "HI poly". The next step is to optimize them down into LO poly version. I mean really simple geometry, like a dome for flower pedals that gets an alpha-mapped texture. All leaves can be planes with alpha mapped textures or single-sided simple pedal shapes (no thickness, no subsurf). Stems can be 6-sided cylinders or less honestly.
Since these flowers are so small, I recommend omitting sculpted accents.
