This was rendered with Blender Internal.
Some prefer the quad only topology of a cube projected to a sphere. A more uniform lower poly sphere with less UV distortion at the poles may be achieved using this approach. Different solutions for different applications.
When is a sphere not a sphere? When it is a cube.

The wireframe modifyer is so underrated. The scene looks great, floor, lightng, it all comes together in a very cool way :)
