I agree with everything said...
the problem I'm having is how to put the nodes together to achieve just that...
one improvement on this one is the inclusion of a node group to help manipulate the environment or HDRI lighting... (from dbrown on community)
This is coming on really nicely although I would just point out (as a trained vehicle refinisher) that if you are going for the usual type of gloss car paint with metalflake through it, then your highlights are off.
If you look at any strong highlight on any colour of car, they are usually always white, if not then a very bright value of the cars colour. It is more noticeable in your older renders, especially the blue one that the highlights are still very much the same colour and a close value to the cars colour rather than white or close to white. Most car paints these days are a base coat of colour with a layer of clear laquer over them , so reflections, especially strong ones will behave like they would on glass, and not so much reflect the actual colour of the base colour underneath. Think of it as painting the inside of a drinking glass and shining a light on it from the outside, through the glass. The bright light will reflect on the glass so much so that it will overcome the colour of the paint underneath and show as white (or the colour of the light )
If however, you are going for a different kind of finish like chrome or anodising or some fancy paint, then ignore what I said :)
Other than that Its coming on really great and you can see improvement on every render. Keep it up :)
