I haven't use one of these since highschool, which was... errr... a long time ago 😅.
This was my exercise submission for the "Luminor" tutorial, by Ewa. It was really fun to do, and through trial and error, i learnt a lot about how do make nice custom decals with Blender only.
Another fun part was to create the screen almost entirely with procedural textures (the number on the left were added as an image texture, but other than that, the grid and the sinusoid curve are entirely procedural).
And before anybody makes the comment, yes, i know you have to plug a source into the device to obtain a curve such as this one, but i choose not to make a "cooler" render 😉.
Thank you all for your comments :)
Due to popular demand, i will add images with a ground + shadows as soon as my schedule permits it. I made this "floating" renders because i envisioned these images as possibles "ads" for the oscilloscope.
Also, i am going to nitpick on my own project, because i notice that on the third render, you can see that the roughness of the numbers on the screen is the not the same as the rest of the grid, i'll definitely have to correct that (i'll update the image).
@theluthier well the selection starts early this year 😅 Thank you.
This is such a cool submission, I love that you chose a completely different device. An oscilloscope is a great choice, and it’s really nice to see how well the ideas from the Luminor exercise translate to something more technical like this.
I’m especially happy to read that the tutorial helped you learn how to make custom decals using only Blender. That trial-and-error process is exactly how you get comfortable with them, and it really shows in the result!
The screen is fantastic too. Using procedural textures for the grid and the curve was a great call, and honestly, it looks so good that it doesn’t even need to be plugged into anything 🤓 I used oscilloscopes a lot at university, and seeing one like this definitely brings back memories.
Great work overall, and thank you for sharing the details behind your process! 🙂🙂🙂
This is brilliant
Koala! I sooo appreciate you creating something related to the course but totally unique from the instructor's model. That's how seeds of instruction grow strong roots!
PS: Keep an eye on your email because I want to invite you to be a 2026 student reel candidate 👀
Amazing work! It looks really great! Great work on the textures.
I still have two of these in the lab that I try to move into storage but the group professor is too attached.
Also I am not worried about the signal when nothing is plugged into the source.
I would be more captivated that you have it powered on at all when the plug isn’t into an outlet 😱
Really great work 👍💪
Great job with the render and details! I love it. As an engineer I used stuff like this in my previous position for like 10 years. Now I am an instructor and teach about it but it'll never diminish my love for O-scopes.
Incredible texturing work! Bravo!
Really nice texturing. I agree about the lack of floor. Would be nice to see it on a floor with some shadows
Wow awesome model and render. I like the radial gradient with the pastel colors. I think the only nit pick feedback is that there's no floor. It'd be great to have a ground floor to catch shadows and make the model feel placed somewhere. Some depth of field is also nice.
