Sorry, no art here, just spaceships from TV.... :-)
So, this was an adventure in a new kind of modelling for me. Previously, when I have modelled something like this, I have done it quite conservatively (all quads, minimal geometry, joined geometry as much as possible, normal maps for the detail etc. etc.).
This time, I threw all of that out of the window.
For this, I followed a "model everything" sort of approach. I went nuts with booleans, lattices and shrinkwraps. While I am sure that someone else did it first, I came up with own technique of using lattices and shrinkwrap constraints to "project" details onto the surface of the ship. I used a combination of the array, curve, lattice and boolean modifiers to actually cut the windows into the hull for added detail.
This modifier heavy process had the added bonus of being mostly non-destructive, right down until near the end when I had to UV unwrap (where it seemed easier to apply most of the modifiers).
Overall, I really enjoyed it. I will probably model this way more often.
