Here's the cup that I initially started to do for the MMF exercise, before I realized that one of the techniques had not been discussed. Basically, the only thing that can't be recreated with the basic techniques is the spiral pattern.
On the "bowl" of the cup, once I had the extrusion, I selected the center point from inside the cup, and grew the selection until I had the rim of the cup as well. Then, using proportional editing, I rotated the selection on the Z axis, making sure the influence did not extend down to the stem, until I had a nice effect I wanted.
The base was essentially the same, but from the center point on the foot.
Otherwise, everything I did can be done with the basic techniques. When I did this one, I deleted a vertex to create the stem, but a little experimenting on the one I submitted showed me that wasn't necessary.
In the picture here, the one on the left is the basic mesh and the one on the right is what it would look like with a level 2 subsurf.
I did a screen cast that I can put into a timelapse if anyone is interested.
NO MATERIALS WERE HARMED IN THE CREATION OF THIS IMAGE. :D
man how did you make the pattern thingy thing, how, how
