Made in Blender 2.73/2.74, with some minor post-processing in GIMP, for Blender Guru's Another Planet competition (the title reflects the "high" hopes I had of winning: turned out I was right -- it didn't even make it into the finals. Always better to be a pessimist than an optimist: pessimists are usually right, but occasionally pleasantly surprised, whereas optimists are forever and always disappointed, disillusioned, dis-this and dis-that, well, basically dissed by the real life. :-) )
Well, they say, fail harder: I hope that was hard enough. :-) Great thanks to Aidy Burrows of CGMasters for his Cracks With Worn Edges tutorial: following it got me going. Here it is: http://www.cgmasters.net/free-tutorials/cracks/
yyukinoh1989, Thank you, but I’ve made better space rockets since then, like this one: https://cgcookie.com/u/anarchymedes/projects/hmas-dundee
I’ve re-used those asteroids there, too, you’ll notice. 😉
great work, love those astroides , crumbling planet and space rocket. and then that background , fabulous work :D
thecodexgamer Thank you for the feedback - you're quite right. Actually, the asteroids are the only part of it I'm still (sort of) proud of: everything else is rubbish, starting from the lava cracks on the planet. I now know much better techniques to do it - and the clouds/storms as well. But hey, everyone keeps saying, fail harder, right? ;-)
cool scene, lighting could use some more attention, and maybe abit more darker towards the edges of the image, and maybe tone down the normal maps for the meteors
BlenderGuru contest entry rules are so restrictive: you're not supposed to use any software other than Blender (not even MakeHuman), you can't use anything made by anyone else, including the stuff purchased on Blender Market, and it can't be an existing work but must be a new project. Still, all losers blame the referee, and no one will say I haven't tried. No one will say whether I'll try again, either. :-)
There are a lot of great artists out there. How it go. It's not whether you win or lose but how you play the game. Well played.
