There is craft, and there is art. Usually, one cannot exist without the other -- although the drawings of a child or numerous cave paintings all over the world, crude, but made breathtaking by the raw emotion poured into them, can be considered examples of art with little craft. In the same spirit, a perfectly photorealistic--but emotionally neutral--architectural visualisation or industrial design render are examples of craft with little art.
Craft is something one can do for a living -- that is, somebody else's way (the customer's way, the boss' way, the fans' way, etc.); art is something one can't help but doing, even if it's the last thing one does--and one does it one's own way, or the highway.
One day I was playing around with MakeHuman, trying to visualise a character from a sci-fi novel I've been working on for years, in the hope to self-publish it one day on Amazon when I think it's ready. And then I looked at the quick render--and realised I simply must get it out of my system. It took almost four months--but only because I could work on it for two days out of seven (my day job is very demanding, and has nothing to do with art). It resulted in the .blend file about half-a-gigabyte in size: four scenes, two in AMD Radeon Pro Render, two in Cycles; and a bit of clever (but still not clever enough) compositing.
But I remembered how many times, on this very site, I'd commented on other people's character mugshots, telling them to 'tell a story.' So, when it was my own turn to have a go at uncanny valley (I posted on that, too), I simply could not dodge it. This Blender Artists post of mine ( https://blenderartists.org/t/no-the-rebel-priestess/1184297 ) says something about what that story is, and why it is what it is; it also features the full 4K render (in JPEG: the PNG one is, like, 12MB in size, and may be found here if this OneDrive link works https://1drv.ms/u/s!Al6ujOE75kIHgY1At4iCJ1OjvzcULg?e=G7O66Q ).
She touches me, though i cannot say why or where - the little glimpse of fear in her eyes? She looks like a being seconds before a hard fight - confronted with her worst enemy - herself? Just another fighter? A farewell from a beloved person? All this and some more events can bring us un in fear. What ist harder? That's a very personal question.
