Angmar the witch king Work In Progress

6 loves

This is my new character project from LOTR world. Making realistic cloth robes was really hard without going high on polycount . Also I want to thank the community for great idea with Alpha maps for cloth tearing <3.
Critique is really welcome! (no mercy!)

Thanks ^^

  • This is really great! Nicely done overall!

Giving merciless feedback because you asked for it. Overall I'm really impressed!

I'd have to go back to the movies and really look at the character, but I'd have a wider cape.

There are a few spots where the folds of the cloak look too flat - like pressed creases almost. Mostly on the back of the character.

There are places where I can see the detail of the cloth, and other places where it's probably there but the detail's too fine. In those places the cloth looks synthetic. I'm not sure if that's due to the lighting, angle of the cloth, or what, but overall the rougher material looks better to me.

Any texturing experts care to throw their 2 cents into the ring about that?

Edit: A little more texturing on the handle and chain of the flail. They both look flat and/or shiny compared to the sword or flail head.

Thank you for the feedback. The cape is actually pretty wide, but because of the standing pose I did, cloth simulation really clustered the cape and made a lot of folds. But yeah I guess I'll try to widen it.
Also I agree about the cloth texture. I scaled cloth texture differently to make variety, but I overdone it to some parts. Yeah I agree with you.
Again thank you for very good points!

  • Great choice for a character project and looks very impressive, well done. My critique would be the chain on the weapon, for the lack of better words, it looks stiff and rigid, not a fluid chain bound to gravity, if that makes sense.

It'd be a good candidate for a sim. Maybe rigid body. Animating it might get interesting, but that'd give you a good start for the hanging bit of the chain.

Thank you. I did not notice that. I'll try my best to make it less stiff. Very good point.

I have seen the extended version of LOTR movies at least 30 times each, and I can say you did a good job with the Witch King of Angmar. If I had to critique something, I'd say in the front shot the drapes in the cloth feels as if something is off, I can't quite pin point it. Maybe is the material or the lighting, feels like it lacks some shine maybe? Or the wrinkles and how it hangs maybe? Also the mask feels as if it should have sharper angles. But all in all man, it looks awesome and the cloth tears ended up looking great. So thumbs up.

Yeah same, I love LOTR movies. I have a tradition to watch the trilogy every year after new years :D.
Yeah I agree with that. I was really struggling with cloth. I took (in my opinion) too much time with that so I settled with the result. I combined cloth simulations with hand modeling. But I got good experience with it.
Thank you very much for always being active and giving good advice!
