CORE | Fundamentals of 3D Mesh Modeling in Blender

Instructor:
Jonathan Lampel

Welcome to the Mesh Modeling Fundamentals, the first course in the Blender CORE Fundamentals series.Β

This course has taken a few different forms and has evolved a lot over the last 10 years and has successfully taught thousands of people how to 3D model. Like the name implies, we’re going to talk about the foundational, most important tools and concepts that you’ll need throughout your modeling journey, whether you’re going into games, animation, visual effects, industrial design, architecture, or any field of computer graphics.

By the end of this course, you should be able to model basic objects with ease and have a good idea of how to approach more complex ones. If you’re an intermediate or advanced modeler already, you can expect to fill in the gaps in your education, learn good habits, and improve the overall quality of your models.Β

Blender Course Overview

Chapter 1

Intro to modeling

Learn all about the tools and concepts that are essential for all types of modeling workflows, including advanced selection, mesh operators, and good topology.Β

Chapter 2

Hard Surface Modeling

Whether your models need to be low poly or high, we'll talk about how the crisp shapes of hard surface modeling can be achieved with modifiers, n-gons, and altered normals.Β

Chapter 3

Subdivision Surface Modeling

Smooth, highly detailed shapes that melt into each other are incredibly satisfying, and you'll learn all about the foundational rules of topology that will help you create them.Β

I liked the multi-step approach to the course, and really felt like I had accomplished something by the end.

As expected I loved the course. I found cgcookie through Jonathan Lampels Blender Basics course and really enjoyed the style, structure and personality. In my mind the payment is absolutely worth it to have a structured course instead of learning almost randomly from other tutorials without connection to each other.

In the videos Jonathan leaves the impression that he is eager to teach and enjoys that you are learning from him and he seems very kind and patient. The speed of the explanations and actions are just right. The structure is well thought out and although I did not remember everything by heart it is organized well enough that I can still find what I am looking for if I get lost while modeling. The quizzes and especially the final exercise was a good motivation to stop just watching videos and following along and instead actually model some objects in blender without a step-by-step guide. I'm wating for the grading, but regardless of how it will be judged I would have never imagined to be able to do something like that with barely more than a week of learning.

The one thing I would add is more exercises (can be completely optional) that are connected to the material but involve a bit more than just adding some details to the futuristic box that was created. Of course I could have done this myself but having the course say "Exercise: create a box in a different style utilizing the mirror modifier" would have motivated me more to actually use blender. I would not expect them to be graded. Just a friendly nudge in the course structure "hey, actually start blender and try out what you just learned without just copying the tutorial." I know that those suggestions are made in the videos and I am blaming myself for not following that advice more, but having it marked out in the course structure would have helped me to actually do it. Even if it says optional or something I would have thought "Well, it would be best to do the exercise before the next video."

Overall: I would definitely recommend this wholheartedly to any friend or colleague who wants to start learning blender. (After sending the link to the basics course)s

Started that course right after completing the PRESS START one. The content was well explained, I could feel that this wasn't improvised and was properly put together. I learned a lot, and got to practice with some fun projects.

The whole quad junctions is still a bit fuzzy for me, but that will come with practice, and maybe with some more advanced content I suppose.

Moving on to the next one!

A comprehensive and engaging course which explains all those bits you're left puzzling about from random YouTube videos. There's so much in this course, I'll need a second run-through. Currently working on the Thirty objects in a room project and it's very hard work but the kind of exercise you need to do to cement your knowledge and expand your skills.Β

Since I work for the Department of Redundancy Department, let me just say again Another Amazing Job, Jonathan. This will be a course I'll both review and refer back to frequently; I'll review it often to remind myself of features and methods I don't use regularly, and refer to it when I simply forget an infrequently used technique. I won't enumerate all the reasons why this course is so impressive - the review would simply be too long. Suffice it to say, if you'd like a solid foundation on which to build your mesh modeling skills, this is the definitive course!Β

The course was easy to understand. The most pleasant learning experience for me was the ability to improve the overall unity of the scene by creating a scale that matches the actual objects. Thank you very much!

This was very detailed. This is also the first time that I've had someone explain the quad junctions. I've seen the diagrams, but never really understood them until now. Thanks for all your hard work.Β

Jonathan is clear in his direction, and easy to follow. The pacing is just right. Very strong on the fundamentals, and the projects were level-appropriate and fun!

This course is a must for learning, and locking in those crucial 3D Fundamentals!

    5/5!

I had been learning blender for a couple weeks before starting the course, and I feel like it really filled in the gaps and helped consolidate my knowledge on modeling! The final project was fun and very challenging. It was my first time making an entire scene without following along with a tutorial, but I'm very happy with the result. The course was easy to follow and a great experience. Highly recommend!Β
