My attempt + topology flow question for the nose.

Took my entire day to get this thing done with very little breaks between, this was really difficult, but fun! I could've fixed it up a bit more with the chin and neck but I got a bit lost with fixing the topology of the nose (example will be below this picture) I added a shape key to make the character look a little animated along with some teeth and a tongue! I might try rigging this later with another CGCookie tutorial. Animating with proportional editing is a lot of fun, squash and stretch away!

Having a lot of fun in general with these tutorials, your explanations are comprehensive and thorough! I used to do a lot of modelling 4 + years ago and just stopped until just a week and a half ago when I came back to CGCookie. Coming back has been even better with tutorial courses like this! :)

My question in regards to redirecting topology flow is, can I try constructing a diamond cut like the example below this photo to fix up the nose? I really could not define the shape without adding edge loops around the eyes since the diamond cut was really difficult to achieve. I probably should've planned ahead a little better with the nose in the beginning.

Hi, I am by no means an expert on facial topology, but is it not common practice to start with loops around the eyes nose and mouth?

Do some tests with CTRL+R to see the different edge flows...

Also, a 7-sided pole? ( a few 3- and/or 5-sided poles are unavoidable on a face, but never use 6-sided or more...)You can see the pinching on the subdivided model.

But to be fair: this is not an easy exercise! Keep it up, you'll get there!

Nice idea with the Shape keys btw, but especially when deforming the mesh, the topology should be good.

I tried starting with the eyes and mouth, but the nose might've just came free form from the eyes, that was a big mistake. I'll try to make the poles in fewer count next time, it's easy for it to get out of hand when the planning is messed up from the beginning. The pinching could only be reduced by smoothing the vertices too many times, I look forward to see how it goes when there are less poles. Thanks for the feedback :)

Like I said, this exercise  is quite difficult, but when you've (finally) 'mastered' it, it's very rewarding!

You might also want to look at yyukinoh1989 's post here: https://cgcookie.com/questions/12467-retopology-critique-and-help

You are making more of a stylized head, but there are many simularities and there is not just 1 way of doing this, there is a lot of freedom in topology, even within some basic rules.

Just keep (re-)doing it and you will get better! (And, frustrating as it can be sometimes in the beginning, it wil also get more and more fun!)

Thanks with the reply that has a great example, something to learn from for sure! Repeat & repeat will probably always be our best friend with practicing topology and anything in general.

Topology flow questions are no doubt difficult and sometime.es difficult to handle and answer in this regard this blog is helping us slot with all the aspects and I get edubirdie service to get all my ready papers. I appreciate them for sharing this with us so we can also have a great and clear understanding of this concept.
