Light groups in Blender 2.8?

Is it possible in Blender 2.8 to limit the influence of a light to a group of objects? In 2.79 you could do this by putting a light and the objects to be lit by it on the same scene layer.  As far as I can see collections don't show this limiting effect and view layers work like different sets of global visibility beyond collection limits..

a workaround  may be using passes and different renders that can be used in the compositing tab

Thank you very much maclaud. I still need to take a closer look at what all is possible with collections and view layers and what are the differences between 2.79 and 2.8 when it comes to setting up passes and render layers. In the last time, my focus was rather on modeling techniques than on rendering and compositing.

That's what I would do too - unfortunately light linking is a missing feature in Cycles and Eevee that most other render engines have.

light linking would be so good to have. a lot of blender users seem to feel the same way: https://developer.blender.org/T68915

brecht lommel has a comment in this thread. it would be interesting to know whether light linking  will finally be implemented and ideally soon. it is also one of the first things that Jeremy Birn mentions in the digital lightingi book that Jonathan recommends in this lesson (and there is a section on it in Chapter 2).
