So I tried Jonathan's suggestion in experimenting using subdivide, extrude, merging and such to make a robot and this is what I got.
I'm starting to get the hang of it and it's really fun even though it doesn't look pretty
it will look better each time you do it again and start to get used to how this works and then can work on what it looks like...
