What did you snap to?

For the top bands, before you scaled the cylinder on the X axis in edit mode, you did a quick scale in object mode (that you just did without mentioning) to get the vertices of the new cylinder to line up with the top of the planks.  I'm pretty sure you snapped to something but I couldn't find anything to snap to that sized it correctly.

As far as I can tell, Kent didn't snap to anything; he just eyeballed it.

Try it, you might surprise yourself how close you get it and when it's a little bit larger, then that would make total sense as well, from a construction point of view.

If you feel uncomfortable with that, you can get it exact by copying the Y- and Z-sizes, but remember,: this is not CAD-modelling and inaccuracies and imperfections are your friend with cases like this!

Thanks. I did end up eyeballing it, and (I think) it worked out fine. Just trying to learn all the tricks I can and make sure I wasn’t missing one!

If this is the part of the video you're thinking, I'm honestly not 100% sure what I'm doing there 😅 I think I'm simply scaling it to be much bigger than I need it, leaving plenty of excess to make my loop cuts for the band. It's not consequential as far as I remember...

PS: A little-known feature of the video player is that you can copy time-stamped URLs of videos using the button in the upper left corner.

Actually I think it was immediately before you did the x-axis scale in that screenshot. The cylinder had to be scaled up so that the edges were aligned close to the outside of the planks rather than the inside of the planks. Without that I had to increase the band thickness too much. The bands would have poked through the inside of the lid. Hope that makes sense.

Anyway, snapping wasn’t strictly necessary. Just eyeballing it worked ok.

Thanks for the tutorial- enjoying it and learning a lot so far!
