Retopology For Game Assets

Hey Guys , i am now learning at Vertex School so i kinda work with zbrush & 3ds max pipeline .. but thanks to you i am in this place (of course will never ever think 1 second to leave blender and you 😛) CGCookie & Blender are what really grabs me into this industry but unfortunately Big dream companies afraid of getting blender into this idustry because as you know (polygons = money)

But my question: How do i retopologize for game assets ?

Santa Monica , Rockstar , Ubisoft .. first they recommend to retopologize high poly to low poly with 10k faces (polygons)... and what i found in the courses i took here .. you retopologize to even 800k with sci fi gun .... Is this illigable ?

and what courses and tutorials here in this community you recommend to me to retopolgize assets for game engines : to apple later to bake high poly to low poly in substance painter ?

so again to 100% clarify my question: What tutorials here you recommend me to retopologize for game engines so i bake high poly to low poly in substance painter ?

Thank you sooooo much in advance

For game assets it varies, how ever, generally less the better. Again though it varies, what the asset is meant to be, if its hero prop for cinematic and focused only on, 800k might be good for it, if it runs 60fps. then if you have props that you have 200 on the screen at the same time, then the even the 10k would be too much. it all depends what the purpose is. and again don't get hung up on the numbers, 200 10k objects might be still good. moderm game engines eat polygons good nowadays, what you have to be aware is to run profiling tools in them to see if you are running into problems, if not, then you are good to go.

The actual retopo stuff and what to take into count, Check the sniper rifle course, If i remember correctly it had portion that explained how not to waste vertices and keep only form.

The Modeling Weapons for a First Person Shooter would also be a good option.
