anyone know why i cant open sculpting file in the latest versions ?

in version 2.8 i can open them . if i open in 2.82 or higher blender keeps crashing along with my computer

  • spikeyxxx replied

Hey yuki, can you post a link to that file?

See if I (or anyone else ) can open it without crashing Blender.

  • Matthew Ullrey(ullreym) replied

I have been using 2.82a lately. I have done just a little bit of sculpting, but haven't noticed any performance issues. One fun troubleshooting idea is to link or append the geometry from the file that crashes into a brand-new blender file and see if the problem comes along.

I agree. Get creative trying to answer the why.....

also there is a method in the fundamentals of sculpting where @theluthier  remeshes/regenerates/restores the sculpt to optimize it again: that is worth looking into.

I can’t tell you how many troubleshooting sessions I have done over the past 2 weeks because of something I did but didn’t know I did that is now bugging the crap out of me.

it all started when I customized my themes and matcaps......i think I went too far haha. But I love my color layout. Hard to let it all go again and start all over from scratch.

Troubleshooting has taught me a lot though. A lot about my mistakes. spikeyxxx  has also helped my learning curve on the troubleshooting. He can tell you stories......lol

    i uploaded my file.

    in 2.8 it is working

  • Matthew Ullrey(ullreym) replied

Hello Yukino, I downloaded your file and sure enough it gives my MacPro the spinning beachball of doom. I have to force quit Blender. Next, I opened the default scene, deleted everything, appended all objects from your "char head5_revised.blend" and all of your reference empties and sculpture appeared. Yay!

So I tried opening your original file again and the same spinning orb of non responsiveness showed up...... but as I was typing this message your file did open finally. It is in sculpt mode with the bangs masked.

So I suggest giving the "Append" method a try and continue from a new blender doc with all of your original items appended.

Really cute, by the way. Great job so far!

    I can confirm the crash.

What appears to be the problem is the Multires Modifier. Also you appear to have tried using Dynamic Topology at the same time...And the hair had non-uniform scale (which didn't have anything to do with the crash, by the way).

    Try opening this version: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XQtpo3q5oDpSO-Xc7NAHpG7QoczOlYsG

You'll have to bring in your references and not use the Multires anymore, but for the rest everything should be ok. (it opens in a flash...)

    spikeyxxx and ullreym

thanks a lot guys . for the append i guess i gonna have to check how to do this :)

so its better to use only dynamic topology and no longer use multires anymore then?

and also thanks for the compliment :) trying my best as i can :D

  • spikeyxxx replied

yyukinoh1989 I already did the appending for you (and applied the Multires and fixed the scale..) in the link above.

    (this one: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XQtpo3q5oDpSO-Xc7NAHpG7QoczOlYsG )

Multires is being fixed, but not completely ready yet.

Anyway I don't think you should use Multires and Dynamic Topology at the same time.

I'd stick to Dynamic Topology for now, if possible.
