UV mapping shows checkered background

I was trying to resolve an issue with overlapping faces when I did something in my uv editor that now shows the checkers in the background. This makes it hard to see the pieces on the uv map. What did I do and how do I fix this?

Additional note: This issue is only with the uv editor, solid view does not show the checkered boxes.

    When I click "N" in the uv editor, and change source to "Single Image" the background removes the checkers (which is what I want), however, the object in the 3D viewport becomes pink, so I think they are unlinking at that time? Any ideas?

    ok, so i discovered that this happened when I added an image texture via the shading layout. I didn't notice that it also changes the uv editor from grid to checkered. I see now that it also happens in the treasure chest tutorial, so I guess its how it is supposed to be.
