My desired starting camera angle is from below, looking upwards (I then have the camera rise and point downwards). A colored ground plane doesn't solve the flickering problem. How could I create a simple world texture that would provide appropriate lighting but not cause flickering from any angle? Thank you!
Try to rotate your plane or go to the Edit Mode and modify it (add some geometry and bend it over your rocket). Or try to create a different primitive (like Ico Sphere) and just remove the front half.

And don't forget about "Object / Shade smooth" if these edges bother you or to scale up the outer loop to increase that mesh. Hope that would help)
