I am trying to complete the robo orb exercise in the basic retopology course. I find it pretty cconfusing when i look at the backpart where i am suposed to place geomtry, and look strraight through it to the part that is already done. Not sure why it is done like that! Anyway, is there someway i can make it so that the i dont see through the backpart?

Here's my 2 cents.
I actually completed this course in blender 2.8 back when it was in the beta testing and I ended up just playing with the settings until I got what I liked. These are the settings I toggled in combination (I don't remember if I used them all but you can play until you get what you like). I may have even turned X-Ray on as well but I don't remember.
