This was a fun course.
Sorry for late submission, I've never taken a live stream course here on CG cookies and didn't know how things work. I guess we get homework, so good thing I just completed this course, otherwise I'd have to stay up late.
Nice! You gave it a nice shape too! (the... concave (?) aspect of the sides)
ttastan Welcome to the class, Tas! No worries about posting the homework late. You're not the only one and being your first time, it's understandable 👌
You've hit a homerun with the treasure chest model. Almost indistinguishable from the one I built for the course. Top-notch work. The only note I have - and it's nitpicky - is that I can spot duplicate wood split detail fairly easily:
These all look a little too similar. But again that's nitpicky. Overall the model is fantastic. You definitely earned an A this week 👍
Hello, and welcome! Good work on the chest so far. I agree with Kent. Otherwise, good effort!
@theluthier Thank you for the feedback. I agree with you I should have changed the pattern so it's not so repetitive, I feel like I did a better job on the outside facing wood panels, but then failed on the inside facing mesh. Thank you for the course.
Homework submission for week 2
Initially I submitted treasure chest, because I was a little late on submitting homework, so I went with what I had on hand. However I do want to follow along with the course and I tried to catch up this week. I created a knife with a plastic handle. I am not sure what to do about painting plastic because it kind of maintains consistent color overtime better than some other materials. I am thinking I'll add a bump/noise texture note to the handle to add a textured look.
Here is where I am at so far.
otowa Thank you. Changing the shape to make it look more stylized was actually part of the Treasure chest course, so I did it following teacher's instructions. It's a very good course too.
ttastan I like the pivot you've made toward the combat knife. The model and texture have progressed nicely!
You make a good point that the plastic handle is mostly a solid color in reality. And if it were a brand new knife, there would be very little reason to do differently. But brand new CG knives are typically less interesting to look at than one that has damage and signs of age.
Here's a great example from Chris Plush on artstation:
Notice the subtleties in the colors, reflective qualities, chipped paint of the blade, and edge highlighting of the handle. I think you can add these same subtle details to your knife where they're most subtle in the color but most noticeable in how they effect the final material.
As for the assignment, you've earned an A from me 👍
@theluthier Thank you for feedback and finding a great reference material picture. I love this knife picture. I am going to add more details to my knife using this example. Thank you :)
ttastan Sorry, late the the party. Good effort, and definitely second Kent's suggestion.
