Hi!

Here is my first ever homework in cgcookie. Its been fun and really helps when there is  deadline. Here is my progress so far.

Yes! its a barrel...i think a whiskey barrel. I might update the model still if i find time in the evening.

Great to be here and see so much talent in other peoples homework!it inspiring me a lot to push forward in my quest in 3d art.

Here we go! Cant wait for the next step. My first barrel ever. Going to finish the scene before this class ends.

kketox1983 Good effort!  I'm guessing you're not going for a stylized look, and that's okay.  Looking forward to the end result!

kketox1983 Welcome to the class and congrats modeling your first barrel! I really like the scene you're developing. Giving models fuller context (like a complete scene) is always a good choice.

Do you have much 3D modeling experience outside of this barrel or is this one of your first models in general?

Yeah..i started also thinking that the model is little bit boring..but tnx anyway for the great insight :)

@theluthier  Thank you Kent! Its great to be here!

I have used 3d studio max in the past...but never really got past of the beginner state of my skill with that software.  And i like blender more. I used blender 2.79 a bit but now i wanna really learn this  and i think its a great opportunity now when 2.8 is here.

This echos my only criticism so far: There's a lack of detail. Proportions are great and the overall structure is spot on. But it'd be a much more interesting model if there were wood splits, bevels and dents on the edges. Currently it feels like a work in progress rather than a finished model ready for texturing.

I'd like to see you tackle those details if you're up for it. This video should be especially relevant to the task.

kketox1983 Welcome in the class Janne, I think the scene idea compensate the relative lack of details on the individual barrels, so just keep it going, nice work

I agree totally Kent. I think i was little clouded, when the model was "ready" but after i saw other students great  models  i realized that it was half away  done. Will do the work.

Great second live stream btw   : )

    Homework Week 2 Submission

So here is week two . Made updates to the model and made uv´s.  After that made my first ever texture paint in blender!

Didn´t do any work to the scene..so much to learn this week, but will finish it for sure.

Really liking here at cgcookie.  :)

I'm very happy to here that kketox1983. And congrats on painting your first ever texture! That'a milestone for sure.

Overall it's a pretty good job. My main note is that it's on the simpler side to the point of feeling unfinished. The wood has minor spots of color tone variation but most of the board appears to be a solid brown color. Solid-colors are not great in the case of wood and aged materials/objects. If you haven't watched it yet, I cover tonal variety in the treasure chest course.

Also there doesn't appear to be much edge highlighting in the texture. That would a lot for emphasizing the boards' shape and wood splits. I see darkening in the crevices between boards but can't see edge highlighting. I also cover these in the treasure chest course.

It's a B from me but considering this is your first ever texture, it's quite good! You'll only get better at it from here 👍
