WIP [Challenge #2 CGC - Vehicles] -Blanchsb

Contests and Challenges

So this is a little late, but I have always loved the character Darkside from the twisted metal game back in the day. I took a stab at it starting on Wednesday or Thursday this week (knowing I would not finish in time hah). This definitely challenged my skills to model on my own without following training tutorials. I would still consider myself a novice at modeling at this point. Here is the WIP leading up to the final submission.

    Adding the back cab

Had to restart the front again and was able to make some headway with the wheels, albeit the treads were backwards, haha

Adding the Patrol Car to the front was where I got hooked on this project. I couldn't wait to to smash that thing so badly.

And you can guess which part I went to next. Crunch, crunch.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

Adding some detailed canisters along the bottom and firming up the main mesh.

Worked on the exhaust. I got snagged on this part for a while trying to get the bezier curve and a cylinder to modify together. I messed up some origin data and had to redo this several times until I figured out the importance of making the mods work before getting crazy with the curves.

I learned a sweet trick on someone's video regarding the importance on modify stacking: Solidify then Bevel then Edge Split (and subsurface as needed). This helped clean up separated surfaces for some much easier modeling. I will remember that trick as my hard earned gold nugget from this exercise. Continued to crunch the patrol car some more and made a gap to add a guard rail in the front (but ran out of time........never to be added for the submission......darn!). Added some quick colors to the materials because I knew I wouldn't make it to the shading/texturing part.

This is the final result. I wanted to post a better render but I added mine at midnight and lost time to submit. This is what I would have submitted though.

Final submission. I am glad I chose to participate in this challenge. It was a lot of fun and Darkside took on a whole new character. I don't regret not getting to the shading/texturing in time because I didn't know about the challenge until Wed this week anyway and decided to break away from my mesh modeling bootcamp tutorials and see how much the crew have really trained me haha (more like how much retention I had from their training!).
