Anatomy for 3D sculpt

Collaborations

Hello, is it important to know the human anatomy for 3D sculpt?

If yes, where to start?

Important yes, needed....probably not. For realistic models definitely but stylized....great reference and i feel makes it easier but all artist are different. I can tell you I am just now getting into anatomy and it’s helped me create a more realistic character.

I started with a human anatomy course on udemy for $10 but you could find YouTube videos or references online. Take 5-10 minute in the morning then at night just looking at the facial bone structure then the muscles and move to another part of the body when you feel comfortable or have done a few studies. It takes time but is totally worth it.

I think anatomy is ABSOLUTELY improtant (hello, Kent :)) for a character artist. Even for a stylized characters.

I'd recommend to start with Gottfried Bammes - The Complete Guide to Anatomy for Artists & Illustrators (I think this is how this book is called in English)

But don't dive to deep into muscles and stuff right from the start. Learn basic planes, shapes and proportions.

nekronavt especially if you have trouble capturing a likeness, realistic or stylize, studying anatomy helps with why something looks the way it does...
